But i must admit that on the subject of dowsing, im not quite shure what to think. I have seen it happen in real life, my father and i once did a simple test in our living room. He held a plastic clotheshanger with a metal hook firmly against his knees and walked over a extension cord, powering a 1000W electric stove. For no apparent reason the clotheshanger bendt, and finally it snapped in two. And no, i am not trolling. This is a true story.

I still remain a sceptic though. It was a non-scientific test for our amusement only, no data was recorded and no pictures were taken. The result is not valid in any ways. Or as Mythbusters would have said it; Myth confirmed...

James Randi once noted that one reason dowsers were so committed was that the ideomotor effect allows the practitioners of dowsing to fool even themselves. This is why observing proper methods of scientific testing are so important -- you must not fool yourself, and you are almost always the easiest person to fool.

BBC Radio 4 has just treated us to a four part series on 'the Bermuda Triangle' - which, while largely appearing to be rational, finally leaves room for doubt, in true journalistic fashion.

Perhaps the ships have been dragged to the bottom of the sea by the Loch Ness Monster, or sucked up into the sky by grey aliens to conceal a CIA conspiracy to hide the fact that the world really is flat after all....

The only scientific study that could reasonably made of these subjects is a psycho-sociological one, which would ask what sort of people believe these things, and what needs are met by extra-rational belief etc

I think the Australian Skeptics thoroughly debunked dowsing some years ago. They even offered a prize to whomever could find the bucket of water! Dick Smith put up the prize money. See Link2 for more juicy details on debunking paranormal phenomena.
