I spent the weekend winding my secondary. I'm pleased with how it came out. It's made from 18 AWG wire and is about 1200 turns over 1350mm wound onto a 300mm plastic pipe.

Nice. I see two empty spools on the ground, did you join two pieces of wire?

Yeah unfortunately, that was the longest wire of that size I could find to buy on ebay, and needed 2 x reels to wind to that length. The join isnt too noticable though so hopefully it should be ok.

Good looking coil though! Got any macro pictures of the join?

I have been progressing further with my new Tesla coil, I've got nearly all of the parts built I just need to wire it all up now, a weekend or 2 hopefully until finished. I will post a summary of it all including sparks once complete in the project section though for now here are some pictures showing the progress

This photo shows me next to the coil to show some scale to it

This is a close up of the primary, 3/8" copper pipe wound onto plastic.

This picture shows the toroid I am looking at using, it consists of 2 large metal plant baskets wired together and mesh wrapped around them and wired tightly onto it. I ran out of time on the weekend just gone to get it fitted to the top of the coil. Hopefully it will work ok.

For such a power beast, your toroid is probably vastly insufficient. You might want to get 6 more baskets so you can approximate a large toroid.

You should look into making a large chicken wire toroid like Syd Klinge did. That small one just ain't gonna cut it.

Yeah, it's too small! Maybe Tesladownunder can help with some sources for toroid parts in Oz.
