bluetooth to control the external mod

hello again,

i was just doing some thinking, was looking at using the arduino bluetooth module as wireless controller for a DRSSTC so its all self contained, would the coil screw up the signal to send and receive? though it would be quite fun to do it wirelessly

I think the coil will screw up the signal, the secondary generates much harmonics that will may interfer with the Bluetooth signal. But I've never tested it. I think other more experienced members can help you better.

i was pondering this with somthing like a zig bee module. both are 2.4 ghz, far above the tesla coil freq. i guess you could test it by monitoring a wifi access point signal with netstumbler then running a coil.

The parasitic inductors and capacitors might resonate causing lots of interference. For example: a wire that's about 30cm long will be about a quarter wavelength of 2.4GHz.

I'm not completely sure though.

I think there's a fair chance of it working. The electronics of a DRSSTC are too slow to generate any interference at 2.4GHz, and also the sparks are probably too long: short arcs are needed to generate energy at high frequencies. Richie Burnett once told me that his SSTC would only interfere with analog TV if his kitchen foil topload wasn't making good contact. smile

And if it doesn't work, there's always IRDA...

There is a problem with IRDA, the IR in the sparks interfere with the link, thats why I went to fibre with Joan

I would be interested if anyone does do a test with bluetooth though...

i would have thought the frequency would be too high to be affected. unfortunately i dont have the means to test it. would make like easy by getting rid of some wires and there's no chance of feeding back (little paranoid about this cos im using my computer)

I have had no issues using 2.4ghz wireless devices near my coils, although they have all been CW or at least quasi-cw.

Here is a picture of my sony clie streaming music from my computer over wifi (the access point was about 30ft and a few walls away, overall the signal seemed to not really be affected by having the coil running--although touching the clie would cause some bad things to happen).

Here I stoped my wireless router from work with my drsstc, and was at proper ground.
It only stops to work a few meters of radius from the coil, all things that use my wifi network suddenly stops from work when I turn the coil on, and back to work when I turn the coil off.

That is why I said that it might have a few problems with bluetooth adapter, since it will be on the coil...

Other thing, some people uses metal box to isolate the driver circuit from interferences, be in mind, that metal box will reduce the bluetooth signal too.

hmm, think im going to do testing with a phone in the base and computer see if i get any signal, have to dig out an old phone! i tell you what happens when i get the coil running for the first time, hopefully this week!! wish me luck!
