Yea, each 555 driver seems to have another small film cap across the fet's drain and source. It is the yellow one, and it is 33nf. One of the other 555 drivers has a different, blue film. It has . df 41-0185 on it. The other one has the 33nf cap. Guess to increase efficiency/decrease heat. Quasi-resonant kinda thing.
For what it's worth, don't throw the electronics out, even if you take it all out. The stuff is nice to have around :P

Arc - Throw it out?!?! Perish the thought! Everything gets stripped of potentially useful components prior to being being tossed. My friends and family bring me their unwanted electrical devices so that I may repurpose the parts. I have have numerous TV's, stereos, microwaves, portable dvd players, you name it, pass through my dungeon of a lab on their way to the landfill or recycling plant. Also, being in the IT world, I get parts from servers and robotic tape libraires. I have 2 5kW server power supplies just waiting to become a new bench supply or be harvested.
Harry - I just read a few articles on the oil-drop experiment. The box I have is not 100% sealed, and would be difficult to make it airtight. I also don't own a pump to bring it down to an acceptable vacuum space. Interesting read none-the-less. Now if vacuum based oil would work as the vapor to remove via high frequency high voltage, then I might give it a go.
OT - I picked up a small variac (0-120-140v 3A) for $30. The windings looked damaged next to the brush track, but a few minutes under a magnifying glass and the tip of a hobby knife (along with a steady hand) seems to work wonders... I already had a variac, but bow I can dedicate the small one to a future project should one be required...
