My current setup is based upon a series of four Linksys WRT54G 801.11b/g routers. Three of these routers run DD-WRT v23 linux (w/200mW power boost) and a fourth, the WRT54Gv5, runs default linksys firmware because it can't run any DD-WRT or Open-WRT (without using an obscure JTAG hack with a minimal install (<1.3MB) because Linksys switched to VxWorks).

It all starts with the next door neighbors' Comcast 801.11g Wireless Router/Modem (192.168.0.1) ] broadcasting an 802.11g(WEP) AP.

The first node on our physical network is "Bob", a WRT54Gv3--DD-WRTv23 at (192.168.1.76) acting as an internet gateway by attaching to the neighbors' network in client mode. This router is physically located ~60ft up, weatherproofed, zip-tied, and stapled to the to top of one of the tallest pine trees in the area (before the tree solution we used a primestar dish like this w/usb over cat5). CAT5 with 15v DC on the unused pairs (power over ethernet, though I didn't really follow the standard wiring) is run all the way from the top of this tree to my room on the first floor of the house (secured with staples and painted 'tree bark' color and then burried). It should also be noted that this router is placed into our neighbor's DMZ, and Bob's DMZ IP is set to that of the next router in our network "Duckpants Labs", a WRT54Gv4.

"Duckpants Labs" also runs DD-WRTv23 (mini) (192.168.1.1) and acts as the main house router/switch. It is connected to "Bob" and about 11 other machines (including a WRT54Gv3 running OpenWRT called "MrDead" acting as a dev/test router) either directly or through an 8 port 10/100 generic switch. Everything is within the 192.168.1.x class C. Duckpants also acts as a 802.11g AP with WPA2 pre-shared key authentication.

To this Duckpants 802.11g WPA2 AP is connected the living room router, a WRT54Gv2 (192.168.1.5) running DD-WRTv23 in client-bridged mode. This acts much like you would imagine wherein all devices physically connected to this router act as if they were hooked directly into the main switch+"Duckpants Labs" router in my room. We didn't feel like running CAT5 out to the XBox or PS2 and this has worked well.

If I ever need to get cable again I'll be using my Motorola SB5120 503677-004 Rev.B modem I picked up for free with rebates.

You can see part of the network in the far right of this picture. The router hanging in the window is the one (Bob) that is now up in the pine tree. The router on the desk is the "Duckpants Labs" AP.

Haha, hmm. Didn't you talk a bit in your musical TC video? You seemed intelligable there if I recall correctly.

[edit]...and there's an xml error on their site preventing me from doing that.

I happen to have a real chaotic network here.
Since the crappy router i got from the phone company always rebooted for no reason, crashed completely and never worked well i set up a old pc with linux to do the work.
Just a mainboard, pentium 90 cpu (with 2,8v instead of rated 3,4v to save power), 32mb ram and 2 NICs.Boots from a 120MB hdd, loads evberything in a ramdisk and then shuts down the HDD and draws like 20W (just as did the crappy router i had before).
Initially i wanted to get a new router but never got around and so this works for around 2,5 years now with no problems...

We have ~10 PCs of which about half are wirelessly connected plus 5 game consoles. These are coneected by an integrated dsl modem wireless + 4 port router, a 32 port router, and another wireless router. Also I think oneof my roomates has a PDA/phone which connects via 802.11*

If verizon ever gets unlazy we'll get fiber.

I've got a wired/wireless network. It has internet connection sharing, but my ISP "doesn't support it" so every time I boot the dial up prog it resets all my network settings. angry My ISP won't let me use windows dialer either, something about an encrypted password. Anyway, ICS on dialup is a nightmare anyway, and then I've got my Xbox which runs through my PC connected to a wireless card. That connects to my main computer downstairs and my dad's laptop.

I am glad to see I am not the only one here with a larger network. smile

I have a cable modem for my Internet connection. That plugs directly into a m0n0wall firewall (old PC re-purposed). The firewall does my dns, dhcp, vpn and dutifully protects my precious data.

Inside I have my 16-port ethernet switch connecting my primary workstation, a windows workstation, webserver, video editing workstation, large file server, and 2 wireless access points. One wireless network is a dedicated bridge to my media pc (movies, television, emulated games). The other wireless network is general purpose for my laptop and my girlfriends laptop and pc.

All the servers and network gear is rack mounted in a rack cabinet I built myself (though I still haven't finished the wood).

I never seem to have any trouble with it until one of my neighbors gets a new access point. The cable company always manges ot set it up for them on a channel I am already using. Luckily they also leave all the passwords at their defaults to I can remedy the situation. wink

Oh, and everything except the windows workstation and the GFs PC runs Linux.
