As everything gets worse and worse, the more people become suspicious of innocent people. That sucks.
And absolutely if someone attempts to get you to do anything illegal, questionable, etc with your science skills or knowledge, refuse.
And that is why i do not hang out with or associate with stupid people. I have had friends in the past that broke into a house, and they tried to get my to make something to i guess stun someone. Even if i could have, what would make them think i would? This was years back. I will never forget that, it is branded into my memory...
And *that* is why i don't like living where i do, it is everywhere out here. My dad has to put up with lazy, inconsiderate, uneducated people at work. And he has to do what they do not do, and pick up the pieces when they screw stuff up. He cannot say anything, because whatever relations would fire him on the spot.

We make a lot of stuff from what grows around us - we live in the countryside in the UK.
Amongst many other things, my wife makes elderflower cordial - one of the ingredients needed is Citric Acid which occurs naturally in pretty much all living things -
So, if I go to the pharmacist, they will only sell it in 50g packs and have to ask you what you want it for - I know our local guy well, and having him ask me if I'm using it for cutting drugs is kind of strange...
...however, I can go on eBay and buy a kilo of it (pure) at a fraction of the price from a brewing shop in the UK no problems at all.

Mr Witham seemed to take all the responsible actions and yet The State slammed down on him.
Over the years I picked up a lot of esoteric stuff (packrats anonymous anyone?), I have all the glassware required to build a Soxhlet Extraction set-up. Used it in the past to try to extract scent oils (aldehydes) of sage, juniper, jasmine, etc. for an ex-girlfriend to play with. I have a pair of Leitz Ergolux microscopes I occasionally use for 'Gee-whiz' biology experiments like what does it take to kill Giardia. Wouldn't dream of letting anyone see all this stuff now in my present neighborhood. Likewise I have a lot of electronic apparatus that, pre-9/11, no one payed attention to, but now nosy neighbors or acquaintences of friends ask "Why do you have that?" or "What are you going to do with that?", so I don't let people into the garage or my "Geek" room much anymore. Some of the right-wing religious neighbors I have, make me nervous.
The 4th amendment to the U.S. Bill of Rights has already been compromised by Presidential Signing Statements that as far as I know have not been rescinded. Jose' Padilla is a natural-born U.S. Citizen, who was denied Constitutional Due Process by decree. Don't think they won't slam down on someone in this country in possession of scientific materiel if they think he, or the equipment, is suspicious, which is odd given that I can possess a number of guns and loads of ammo, and that's considered patriotic.

These are sad times indeed.
When innovation finally grinds to a halt, the human race will cry "where did we go wrong?" (assuming of course we still have the right to ask questions then..........)
On Harrys advice I lodged a copy of my Chemicals, with my GP, the Pharmacist, and the local Police, who "know all about me" they said anyway! The Police were very good about it, and stuck it on their noticeboard for all to see. Still I worry a little....

In the lecture theatres of the Terror Factory, such a policy of absolute 100% openness, even inviting all and sundry to visit your lab, would be taught as poof positive of guilt, for who but the worst of the worst * would ever think of being totally honest about anything?
* Code words indicating that 'terror' microfilm has been hidden in a German sausage.

That search was probably (IMO) a breach of the European Human Rights act and, therefore ilegal in the UK. Illegal searches also happen in the US; and in some states (TX IIRC) it's illegal to have a 3 neck flask without a icense. The problem isn't where you live; it's police with no idea what they are doing.
actually, it isn't what most people think (and I do live in Texas) - in order to help decrease drug labs, if you order glassware you are supposed to place an application to the DEA, or Drug Enforcement Agency for foreigners, and essentially state that it is not for the purpose of drugs - they can ask you a specific purpose, but unless they have legitimate reason (like you being an ex-convict, they cannot deny it
it really isn't that big a deal, last i checked it just asked what glassware, what purpose, do you have a criminal record, and a signed statement that it isn't for drugs, I don't think it even has a fee associated with it
What is the point of that meant to be? Does anyone say "Yes, I plan to cook up a batch of crystal meth with it."

I buy citric acid by the 10kg every few years on the net and haven't had a problem. My water is about 999,999 ppm (perhaps I exaggerate) calcium bicarbonate, and I use it for descaling kettle, w/m and for bringing shower doors and chrome taps back up to sparkling. I knew there was some substance dissolving use possible for it, but I didn't know until I dug around today it was a preferred catalyst for making an irregular whoosh-bang-nasty. My source (the Soap Kitchen) sells it for making "bath bombs" (citric + bicarb + soap + colouring + smell + sparkly bits), an amusing coincidence. I guess buying by credit card and having it delivered to your address is not the modus operandi of your average terrorist or drug baron.

by having this record if someone makes a suspicious report they can check credibility, before assuming it must be drugs - i.e. they can no longer make grounds for search/arrest/confiscation of equipment that you have it without registering it or for drugs (without other evidence), because any sensible person should if it is legitimate, as there is no trouble in doing so
it is a little weird, but at least this hoop is large and low to the ground when you jump through it
