I agree with GeordieBoy. I have done this before, and OMG CW hurts when it arcs over. And i was only getting about 5 inch sparks at the time that happened. It turned the whole tip of my finger that color, with the distinctive smell. Thank goodness i am not stupid enough to try that with the HF vttc. That would essentially be getting shorted across a MOT!
Also, CW is continuous wave, meaning fullwave rectified and smoothed, it looked like you got CW confused with just un-interrupted.
Also, you may not have good luck with the lightbulb trick. It usually blew my halfbridge to bits when i turned the bridge power on first, then the PLL. I would say try it, though. I'm not sure if that would happen to you...

Very nice, your GDT looks fairly large similar to mine, I don't know the specs of my core (it's from some filter) but 4 turns is enough on mine. With such low turns, any ringing is virtually gone.

Hey,
Yeah arcstarter I think I might have gotten a bit confused with the terminology. I assumed that any tesla working without interupting the gates/at the resonant frequency was considered CW. Thanks for the heads up.
Dr. Kilovolt, with 4 turns you must have an extremely high AL material! What mosfets (gate capacitance) are you running with the GDT? These large toroid are pretty hard to saturate though. :P I am definitely thinking of going down at least a turn or two. The coil is apart at the moment getting more layers of acrylic, due to all the burn marks (had some more flashovers -.-), the coils nickname is now "scar". I will post up a picture soon, it looks pretty bad in the picture but most of he black came of with some sanding etc. :) Wire is undamaged only 3 turns are shorted out where the arc pierced through the varnish, still seems to work with same performance though (tested before I took it apart).
