I had worked for a County Library system IT dept. and everything I had come in contact w/ tracks with what Nicko elaborated on. When we had to set up Win systems we never had admin rights to the public & that saved quite a bit of work. however one thing I had seen if you don't use a router (single machine) is IF you happen upon the false virus banner/dropper ads and the rest is to actually shut the machine off as in cutting power at that very moment. The dropper comes from keyboard agenda at that point, so that if the machine is shut down (rather than modem, etc or backing out) the trigger point can't have an opportunity to drop. This is a drastic agenda but it saves a great deal of clean up. You end up with trash tmp files, etc but you don't have to track down the more well designed Trojans. I totally agree that AVG and Malware-Bytes is perhaps the better free items on the market.
One of the better Linux selections that runs a windows selection is SUSE (German origin, I believe) and from about v10.x onward will install as seamlessly as a windoz install. Looks great and has been a pleasure on a older machine. A machine with 512 ram and a 1200 athalon cpu will run unusually fast w/ SUSE.

I have seen some people drop carrier via the modem by unplugging it; right on the moment you encounter the spoof ad while on the internet, but generally the dropper will still be in your RAM at that point.
There are methods for simply locking your registry to all but stable machine functions so any write to the registry will have to have your "OK" but that can become an annoyance. The updates of both AVG & Malware-Bytes are SO current that they catch an enormous amount of things that Norton's Heuristic annoyance would let go.

It was a long time ago, and I really don't remember now, Tobias.
