hello all,

i've searched high and low, maybe its cos im not looking for the right thing, i really dont know...

anyways im based in the UK so looking for local suppliers and 240 volts and im using the mini brute design, im trying to track down a filament transformer 24VAC, 48VA. and a ferrite core for the half bridge. little bit stuck at the moment and i really want to get this project done as im on a bit of a deadline.

thanks a lot gang! some sort of pointing me in the right direction would be great!

What do you mean by "ferrite core for the half bridge"? All you need for a half bridge is a single diode. You dont even need DC for a filament any ways.

Hmmm...
Quite clearly this is something other than what I thought. A good place to find the ferrite core is inside the power supply of a PC or inside any power brick/wall wart with primary resistance that is not indicative of a transformer which means switch mode power supply which usually use that type of transformer. If you use ones from a PC be careful since there are two large filter capacitors which will do more than tickle.

There is usually no difficulty finding common parts like 24V transformers on ebay. Here are a few that took only a minute or two to find using the search term "transformer 24V", which you might like to try doing yourself now:

Both of these look a little expensive to me, but if you hold out for a bit I would expect to get a 24V transformer of a few amps rating for less than £10 bye and bye.

I second Steve on Farnell, with whom I deal regularly. Thier online catlogue is excellent, they are very reliable, and parts come the next day as a matter of course.

I use Farnell, RS & Rapid Electronics every week - Both Farnell & RS do next-day delivery as part of the deal, and quality & range of stock is excellent. They are not the cheapest, but you get what you pay for. Farnell now stock (actually have in stock) nearly 500,000 lines... 95+% of what I use (which is a fairly eclectic mix of stuff) comes from the above suppliers in the UK.

Note you can also use DigiKey from the UK (they have a UK site) with a minimum order charge & shipping, but you can order any of their parts for very rapid delivery to UK mainland.

I've built a minibrute - most of my bits came from Farnell - note, and I hope you realise this, that the miniBrute is a 120VAC design, and needs some modification for 240V for the HV rails for the bridge (lose the voltage doubler etc).

Yeah, that would be Fair-Rite type 78 I guess. RS have toroids in that ferrite grade, such as part no. 467-4454, but Farnell don't seem to stock them. They probably have an equivalent part from Epcos or whoever, though.
