Th

I decided to get some acrylic for testing today, but I saw it might actually fit my caps. I was told you want to space the caps out, else they will arc to each other. Out of these 2 pictures, What design will work best? If none, any ideas to lay it out on this? My goal is 2 sets of 15 in parallel.

Your first setup got all your capacitors in a big loop...

The second setup is fine, what you need to have in mind is making the distance needed for the potential difference between two capacitors.

2nd setup: You bank is f.ex. rated 30kV, so the largest potential difference between two caps will be in the ends where its 10 capacitors in series, ei. 20kV, so with respect to peak voltages etc add some extra distance.

You could also place the strings on separate plexi boards and mount the boards above eachother in parallel, with a layer of plexi between, there should be no problem and the potential difference along two even strings should be near zero.

Please note we're talking AC here, not DC. So my 2nd setup calls for 2 sets of 15 (7500 VAC) But Everyone always runs these caps way over the rated voltages. Anyways, I basically got 2 sets of 15 in parallel. All I wanted to know was if the spacing was fine or not. I've talk to multiple people including arcstarter, and they all told me that a 12KV NST will run fine with 15 in series. I was told also to look at each CDE like 500-1000VAC. In my case, to work with 12KV, that would be roughly 800VAC each. So, I was told that 12KV 60ma NST will be fine with just 30 CDE caps. I just wanted to know, if they are space correctly in setup 2.

I am making an MMC where all 80 caps are touching the adjacent caps which should be compact. Each cap has been rolled with 3 layers of polyethylene. This is quick and simple and should minimise the risk of adjacent cap arc over.

And here they are made up into an 80 cap compact MMC. They are not anticipated to get hot but there will be some fan flow.

Wow...I never thought of that. Looks very nice. I finished mine and it tested good. I'm at work so I'll have to get back to you later. I have pictures of it working. Whn I get home I'll post pics!

TDU, very nice!

Where do you get the supplies for your home rolled caps?

well, I think he used CDE capacitors and put 3 layers of poly film over them. I don't think he actually rolled the capacitors. He just put poly film around them, so he could put them close to each other without having to worrie about them arcing to one another. Protection, not fully homemade :)

If you are speaking about the caps that he actually did make, you can get polyethylene sheets for cheap at a hardware store, under paint. It is usually for covering floor's while painting.
