In fact, a direct lightning hit should it happen that way will rip a concrete block apart as lightning protection tests proved. So I guess that was an indirect hit. Btw this reminds me of an old case when during a match one of the teams started a fulll offense, and the other one had to defend their positions standing still. After a lightning hit something, the step charge did nearly nothing to the defending team, and those in offense were running and got a full feel of that one.
As for the probability - of course it is totally random, just the chance to hit a coil is a little bigger ;)

A 1m tall TC with a 1m upward spark will be a more likely target then a 2m pole. However keeping in mind the randomness there, the strike probability will be very low anyway, and we are not counting a 2x growth dangerous even if it's 0.2% vs 0.1% (it's way lower in reality) ;) Btw there was an interesting picture around the web a while ago, which was worth the photographer his clean pants - it depicts a lightning bolt and a few nearby leaders, one forming like a couple of meters in front of the guy and being like 1m tall. Talking about statistics ;)

On what basis other than your "gut" feel. Provide the proof or evidence that lightning is more likely to hit the TC in the example above. The burden of proof lies on the one making the claim in this case.

Again, there is nothing magical about a Tesla coil arc that is going to make it a better conductor than a metallic pole. In fact, the impedance of the arc is probably worst than that of similarly sized piece of wire.

Actually the ionised air around a running TC PREVENTS lightning strikes,
PROOF-

No one has ever had a running TC hit by lightning.

We should all put Tesla Coils on our roofs!

Maybe if it's possible, if we covered a whole area with tesla coils to prevent all possible strikes, eventually there's going to be super lightning (higher charged than regular because it cant strike) and explode a tesla coil!

Please don't take my last post as serious !

I just thought this thread needs a conclusion.

I made up the bit about ionized air ..... But the conclusion seems ok;

Since no one has ever reported an operating TC being struck by lightning
we can assume that the risk is low.

In practice (to repeat my first post on this topic)
lightning is not what we need protection from -
RAIN on HV equipment is much more of a concern.
So I doubt any of us have run a TC outdoors during a thunder storm !
