Hello Again....

Actually I have no idea on who made the accelerator tube, I suspect it is from a big Hitachi electron microscope because some Japanese high vacuum stuff was listed at the same time fame, and it seemed like it all would fit together. It is on its way to me from the seller as I write this. I have been searching for an accelerator tube for years now with no luck at all.

I had a hot lead one time from a semiconductor spare company because these tubes are used in ion implantation machines, but these usually run at 250-400kV, so my idea was to couple 2 or 3 of these together. My dream has been to achieve the magic number of 1 MEV.

My main concern is the radiation safety end, even with electron suppression you still get a bremstralung x-ray dose rate of 2.5 rem /hr at 1 meter from a 2 MEV electrostatic accelerator for example, when it is just turned on!!! At 1 MEV this would be about .5 rem / hr which still equals an early death. At 500KV it goes down to an acceptable level with just distance, with no active shielding. Yes some folks may be thinking just add some lead, the problem here is that at 1MEV the half value layer of lead required is about 1/2 inch!!! And this is only to attenuate the radiation 50%, the other half still gets through, so this is about a ton of lead required.

We are saving money to build a house so a lathe is to expensive at the moment for me, but I have a hand crank Chinese coil winding machine which will work if I make a wood jig, plus it will even count the turns :) For building small transformers, and coils, I would highly recommend these they are about $75.00 on ebay and they do the job. The down side is that they will only work well up to about a 6" length. I suppose that you could build a bench with a spindle at the other end to do longer coils, like Tesla coils, but I have not tried this.

As far as what I want to accelerate goes, I will start with electrons because its easy, then reverse the polarity and start with protons. I have some heavy water but with deutrons you get a neutron hazard. A 600kV / 5 ma deutron beam on a Beryllium target will give you 10 to the 11th power neutrons per second, a severe radiation hazard. This is enough to make the fusor folks "wet their pants" along with the federal and state authorities. I had considered this because I wanted to try neutron radiography, but given that fast neutrons will sail right through 10cm of lead, and require 1 meter of water for shielding, caused me to shelve this idea until I can build a small "pool" some day.

I do however want to design the accelerator to have the capability to do this, given that 3kw at 600KVDC could be a lot of fun in other ways!!! I figure 600kV is about the practical limit in air, beyond this things get huge and turn into towers in an aircraft hanger. If I ever find a cheap bottle of SF6 gas then things could change fast. I am surprised though that no one has done a Tesla coil in SF6 gas at atmospheric pressure? It has 2-3 times the insulation of air even at normal pressure. I did recently find some giant ferrite cores, check these out folks:

Check out the UU 120 / 310/ 20 double U core. The length available for winding is 10 inches or 25cm, this is 2 times that of my Ferroxcube U126 double core. These are made by TDK in Japan for big industrial stuff like electric locomotive trains etc. I have not asked how much they cost, but they are NOT offering samples:) jpsmith123 got 400T on 4 inches in a single layer, here you would have 1200T, now with a 12 turn primary you have a 1-100 ratio easy with a single layer.

I am curious about the CPVC material, because I had it under consideration to enclose my HV multiplier at one time. How does it do with corona conditions, and ozone exposure? I will have to look this material up again, thanks for the suggestion.

Aloha......Lutz :)
