[edit] Just made & posted a webcam video of my flatted MO fan motor.
That is a perfect video, thanks :D. You can clearly hear the noise i was talking about when i said something about how there is a noise when out of sync.
I ground alot more off my MO fan motor to get it to sync perfect *every* time. It lost no sync torque, and it does not heat up too much more. After about 5 minutes i would likely let it cool for a minute or two and it would be cold again, it might never overheat, probably stay at the same temperature.
I would suggest you grind the flats down another 2mm or so, to ensure it stays sync at the same spot every time, to increase the sync torque (probably) and to eliminate the 'warmup' time.
I will take a video of my motor now, i suppose. A picture is worth 1000 words, a video worth around 100,000 :P.

Oh, I never noticed the permanent magnet in the original pictures, but now you mention it, I think I see one. That'll make it synchronous all right The squirrel-cage part of the rotor is only for starting and damping oscillations in this case.
If it's an 1800rpm motor you should find that the magnet has four poles too.
