You definitely need to be using two zeners; try Steve's circuit. If you are clipping the negative side of the CT output with a zener you are creating more problems for yourself. Excessive signal delay, high peak currents in the ZD, and asymmetrical loading just to name a few. The best thing for you to do here is get a scope, scope your circuit and then build Steve's and scope it. You will see what I'm talking about. I know you're wondering why it worked once with your current setup but since you can not repeat those results one can only assume they where obtained in error (lose wire, bad diode, gravitational field from mars, etc.)
Those combo motor driver bricks might work for a super small DRSSTC but I think they are best suited driving motors or making controlled rectifiers (think solid state variac).
