Hello
Do you folks have trouble with your high voltage experiments activating the TV ?
Here the other day I was amusing myself with my marx generator, it makes alot of noise so I was wearing hearing protection, and when i took it off I heard piano music. To be honest i got rather suprised, so I looked around my room just to find out the TV had been turned on.
I can't seem to figure out what the cause might be, but I'm fairly sure its got something to do with the marx generator because normally my telly doesnt switch on by itself.
Any ideas what it might be? Of course I could just unplug the TV and the problem would be solved, however I'd like to know why it turns on.

I'd suggest that your television and other consumer electronics in your house may be in danger of dielectric-puncture type failures.
Suggested Remedies:
Line borne:
1. Disconnect the Marx from the PSU momentarily before firing by means of a vacuum relay etc.
2. Put a really good filter/spike clipper/spark arrestor in the power supply to the Marx.
3. Connect the Marx to a completely independent Earth so that nothing is shared between the Marx and your domestic house wiring. at the instant of firing.
Radiated:
Put the Marx in a metal cylinder or Faraday cage connected to an independent earth. Penetrate the shielding with ceramic feethrough capacitors where necessary and appropriate - relay control wires, trigger pulse etc.

I had a similar issue with my Tesla coil causing enough RFI to cause it to turn the DVD player and TV on and start playing DVDs. A good line filter on the high side of the coil is a good idea, although its a little hard to find one that has a high current rating.

I like to use independent power sources, like a car battery and an inverter - that depends on what kind of power you are drawing and what kind of spikes you expect to go in reverse through your PSU... I got a 300W 120VAC/12VDC Power Source for about $50 - I have used it for a bunch of different HV stuff just fine, but nonetheless you risk ruining it, but better that than stuff in your house!

The most amusing case of interference I had was with my tabletop SGTC next to a musical keyboard! On every breakout, there was also a strange tuneful burst

I dont supose one of those filters that is found in computer PSU's or monitors fall under the category of "really good filters"? I'm probably not drawing more then a couple amps.

Maybe an isolation transformer would be best, then you can use it for any project you want to run off the mains. Of course if you find it's rfi you'll have to keep Harry's faraday cage suggestion in mind.

Have you thought about the obvious explanation yet?....Ghosts! :) You can usually pick up 3phase 30A line filters pretty easily and cheaply, this should do nicely.

When running my 6inch SGTC outside once i set off a car alarm but it didn't stop after one cycle it just kept going for about an hour while I packed up and snuck back inside.
