With due respect you give a completely unsubstantiated number and give it an accuracy to within 5000.
If you know that there are 20 active coilers in a given area and you are in a position to be able to know the inactive coilers and the reference area population then you are in a position to extrapolate. Knowing active coilers with websites is (relatively) easy, it is the much larger number of coilers without websites that needs to be estimated.
If you are, I presume , talking about mid eastern USA, how can you get to know non-website coilers in a population that must be in the multpile 10's of millions?
Choose instead a local town that you might know the stats better, and that may be a useful contribution.
In terms of deciding who constitutes a coiler, that is arbitrary and may be difficult to determine. Most of us would take it to indicate a peson with a hobby of Tesla coils and having made or assisted in the building of one.
I just discovered a coiler in WA with his own small hobby site site that was hidden in a large business site, which is what promprted this discussion. Also the very active Tesla Forum in WA and I had no knowledge of each others existence for years.

Well to be more precise. I got to know "alot" of "one-time" coilers over the years. Helped most of them out , there are around 30 just form the Local University. (Not counting those who just want to own a coil , well they may want to build one sooner or later ) So that 15-20000 was just my rough guess for a world-wide number.

Dr. Spark, all -

Well, I'll be the first to raise my hand and admit to being an "ACC", at least at this point in my life. I've just been so swamped with other priorities over the last two years that actually finishing a complete, fully-packaged coil just hasn't happened. I've run tests and made measurements, but no "finished" product. I've got LOTS of "work in process", but I guess you actually need to generate ozone to pass the test. I'm looking forward to getting some of these half-completed tasks finished, it's frustrating to have such a long "to do" list with Tesla stuff near the bottom.

For instance, here's my 4" SISG coil, about 90% completed, but it's been at this stage for months. All it needs is a bit more wiring and then tuning

Next is the rectifier board for the coil, tested and ready to go:

Then, some of my pile of secondaries. Some are finished, with ground plates and internal baffles. All have had resonant frequency measured with several different toroids installed. Some need to be coated & terminated.

This is a detail of the epoxied-on ground plate.

Then, two MMC assemblies, a .014uF at 21kV, and a .033 @ 36kV.

Part of my collection of candidate VTTC tubes, all triodes except the 4-1000 pentodes at the LH side. I've got sockets and filament transformers for all of these, just need TIME to build!

Finally, some of my solid-state board assemblies, some 100% completed and tested, some still missing components, none creating ozone.

I'm absolutely shocked at how quickly some of the senior coilers here (Finn, Dr. Spark, etc) are able to design, build, tune, and finish major TC projects, maintaining the highest technical and esthetic quality, while it takes me forever to complete the simplest task. If this was a marathon, these guys would have finished all 26 miles while I was still tying my shoes!

Regards,
Herr Zapp

Herr Zapp,

As you probably already know, in the AC math equation with "j-operator" , the "j" is classified as an imaginary number. So if j=tanVA then j=ACC. So get your act together and finish that beauty you've been working on! We're all getting really tired of waiting! Blah, blah, blah...as i need to stuff a signal from the MKIIc modulator into it and make it sing! We still love you; so bring it on!

So we are looking for a number that would represents the "Active" coilers or what does it take to become a "coiler"? Would those also count whom, at one time (in this century :P) have built/bought a working coil (kit :P)? If so I would say theres atleast 15-20000 "coilers" world wide (i know about 20 "active" (with websites) in the middle eastern parts)

15-20000 is a wide range...
Heh, so if i built the DRSSTC mentioned in Daniel's book does that exclude me from being a "coiler". How difficult do you think it would be for the average person to follow those instructions and build a DRSSTC. I didn't think it was all that bad but then again I did have a lot of help from the community. =)

Arm Chair Coilers and Websites, hahahaha, you guys... hahah. How important is a website to you guys anyway.

I'm probably credited as being the biggest ACC here despite the fact that I've paid my dues since 1990. Website got taken away because I don't have bundles of money for that. I'm no Richie or TDU, but I do what I can for you guys so you can improve your coils.
I've been busy lately trying to get high power amplifiers going so I can base drive the secondary and actively characterize its impedance at resonance.

I also spent a large wad of cash on many doorknob capacitors so I could have a "Decade Capacitor Bank". That's really getting into the nitty-gritty of optimization!

Well'p.. I think its time to crawl back into the background of obscurity again. Maybe I should get some pennies together for a website... if that's how someone's worth is really measured these days.

Here's my spark gap made by me with a Drill Press, no fancy machinery!
