I would too suggest a magneto. I once used it as a potato cannon ignition source, if you discharge a capacitor into the 'primary' (this is actually to kill the engine, when you short this coil there is no high voltage present on the 'secondary' so no ignition) charged to something like 40 volts. You can also use these coils with the light dimmer and capacitor ignition coil driver. These do not like square waves, but prefer sine waves if you ever drove one with some sort of a driver, just do you know.
The 'primary' is just a terminal or wire coming out of the side, the metal core is the other side of the primary+other side of secondary, and the HV output wire is very obvious.
I could get a spark to just about an inch with a 300uf lytic capacitor charged to 40 volts.
Also, a BBQ bit igniter can make a spark jump about an inch, or something like these.

If you would kindly say how many volts this pulse has to be - or how big the spark needed etc - I am sure we will be able to come up with better suggestions.

I would go with the piezo from a BBQ. There are also electric BBQ igniters that you can get, that give a rapid series of pulses. The manual igniter would be a good trigger, Its red and quite hard to push =)

the reason I do not want to use a BBQ igniter is mainly that the button is on the High Voltage Source, so I would have to run a LOT of HV rated wire... and the electronic ones would be more expensive than getting a purpose made circuit! the spark just has to be about a quarter of an inch
I just need this to fire my Triggered Spark Gap, I have some stuff that works but I don't want to gut it, and then have to build an inverter circuit to go with the already a little too large setup...
as for the magneto: how large are they, and how much do they cost usually? - it seems like it would be similar in size to an Ignition coil, which is too large
