What about the smallest size of TV flyback? If you only need a single shot, you can charge up a capacitor with a camera module if you have one, and then dump it through the flyback primary. The 300V pulse from a camera capacitor will give you a nice spark if you dump it through the regular flyback primary, so no need for any extra winding jobs and so on.
I have a box full of new and boxed DC flybacks in the shed somewhere, many of them with data sheets, and will send you one if you'd like to contribute a few dollars to 4HV.org on my behalf.

how large are the flybacks? size really does matter here...
also I went ahead and bid on the module you linked to even if I don't use it for this project in particular, it should come in handy for a lot of my other stuff...
EDIT: I just had a realization for another, cheap and small source of power which might work in this case: neon clocks! - most can run from 12V, and the transformer is small... not as high of an output as many, but enough to trigger a gap for sure...

I'll have a look at the flybacks in the shed for you tomorrow, lad. I'd guess the smallest of them is a bit smaller than the size of two matchboxes side by side, but I'll have to have a look, as I haven' seen them for a year or so. The flybacks are all split secondary types. The small ones have an output of about 20kV/3mA when operated according to the data sheet.
If your bid on the 6kV module isn't successful this week, that guy has been selling one a week for at least a year. I guess he'll run out one day, but they are extremely good value when you are lucky enough to get one for $10 or so as I did. As you say, the new ones are very costly, and I should never be able to afford them myself.

This is about the smallest size of DC flyback I could find in the shed - there are some others that are perhaps 5mm smaller on each side, but this one is new and boxed and has a data sheet.
If you would like it, please donate a few dollars to 4HV.org. When Chris tells me he has your donation, I will send it on by post from England.

I need something smaller than that... the transformer, the discharge cap, and the switch must fit within a fairly small space (just a couple inches in each direction, with a maximum height of about 1.5" for all of it) - I'll see if I can work something like that in, but I'd have to take away space from other things (like caps, cable storage, diode array, and monitoring circuits)...
that scale is in centimeters, right?
EDIT: I just realized how small CCFL inverters are, I might see if they can give a decent spark... but I'd still be interested in the flyback even if I got something else, if I could wait a bit (need to wisely choose what parts need funds, and still save for my first HF radio)

I've got a big box of assorted new flybacks, so they'll still be here in a few months time. When you want one, just contribute what you think a new flyback is worth to 4HV.org and I'll send one along. I have some larger ones too, about 28kV, 4mA, all split secondary DC types. No hurry. They'll still be here!

CCFL only give out a few hundred volts, might work if you add a CW on the output.
isn't it a couple thousand to "strike" the tube, which drops to a few hundred after striking? I thought it was like that, such as in tasers, but i could be wrong...
