for my Portable, Modular Capacitor Pulse Bank, I am using a Triggered Spark gap - I had planned to use a purpose made Pulsing Unit I have, but I decided to not Frankenstein it for parts (I use it for a LOT of things)... and I can't just simply hook it up, as I plan to use the bank with 12V batteries for lower power pulses, and saving 120VAC for higher energies... and the pulse unit runs on 120VAC...

I would use an Ignition coil, but it is going to add a lot of space, and then i have to add the circuitry to it - and I need that space for charging, monitoring, and other firing circuitry and Capacitors (the original pulse unit had the circuitry, transformer, and even pulse speed control all in a space smaller than an ignition coil)

so does anyone here have a micro-sized pulse transformer they'd be willing to part with? the size I am hoping for is like these mini transformers from Information Unlimited http://amazing1.com/transformers.htm (who makes my pother pulsing unit... it happens to be one of their good products, whereas I'm skeptical of others...)

I had some more of these, but I kept trying to push their limits tongue - they are surprisingly good mini-HV transformers...

Depending on what kind of pulse/voltage you need, something from Link2 might work

those seem perfect! - but what is their input voltage?
- the mini transformers from Information Unlimited I planned to use, were 400V, and the other mini transformers there that I have used in the past are 12V just for reference

I am hoping to find one that will use a ~12V input for the actual HV transformer... and now that I think of it, it does not really have to be a "pulse" transformer as any mini-HV transformer will work

but if the voltage of that one you linked to is low enough, it should be Perfect!

i have some really nice military type pulse transformers if you're interested. There red and about 1 inch square in size.

May I suggest the kind of small ignition coil made for lawn-mowers and other small petrol engines like chain saws? Some of these are smaller than a matchbox, have just two input terminals, and one thick O/P with the HT. They can be expensive, but I bought one last year for £5 - about $8 - on ebay.

For general purposes, I am very fond of the modular HV supplies from Venus Scientific's C15 series - a matchbox sized module with I/P 12V, and O/P 1500V/1mA, which is excellent for powering sealed proportional counters, PMTs, and Hi-Z GM tubes.

I'd also recommend the Brandenberg HV modules. I've had a 6kV/3W module running 24/7 for more than a year without problems:

I don't know how I never thought of using an ignition coil from a chain saw! - I'll take a look to see how much I can get one for locally - so far ebay doesn't look very cheap for the ones that are small

and those Brandenberg modules seem pretty good, but from the distributers I can get a price on them from, they aren't cheap...

I take these into consideration, but after seeing the prices for some of them I might just go for getting a fresh one from info. unlimited

maybe, maybe not

@ Dr. GigaVolt, how much would you want from one, and what are the specs?

I though you need a flying magnet for the magneto to work?
How about "coil on plug" type coils?
or maybe a BBQ igniter?

a BBQ ignitor would require long HV leads and would not interface well with external control...
and for the "coil on plug" type I assume you mean a 120VAC operating transformer? I need to be able to run this thing portable
and I'm afraid I don't get you magneto statement, in relation to the topic at hand...

This ebay seller offers Brandenberg 6kV modules every single week. I've bought a couple from him over the last year. Sale prince has been £6 the first time, and about £10 the second:

The output tracks the input, so if you only want 3kV o/p, you power it with 6V.

Or how about an old piezo cigarette or gas lighter?

Thanks Harry! - again, as for using a piezo device: I would have to run a lot of HV wire which is inconvenient, and it does not allow for another form of control, such as the controls I already have installed...
