Also, many of these schematics seem overly complicated, maybe it is so you can use easy to find parts like in Richie's design. Is there any problem going with a crystal oscillator, through a 4024 ripple counter as a clock divider, and then straight into a high performance gate driver like an IXDD414? It's a 14 amp peak low side FET driver that draws about 200ma at 12V supply into 2000pf @ 4MHz, TO-220-5 case style.
