Hello! I have won $200 from my 8th grade science fair and have decided to use the money to add to my test equipment and buy a frequency counter for work on my next years project on wireless power transfer. I was hoping that some of the more experienced members among us / professional electrical engineers could give me some recommendations about what models / brands of frequency counter to search for.

Thanks in advance.

(should this be in sale and trade?)

Cool.
BKprecision has cheap function generator's with counters, I recently (4 days ago) got this one:

That is twice your limit, but you can probably find a refurbished one for less. If you can, look for a DDS rather than a analog generator.

If you just want a counter, and no generator, here is one:

Thanks, but both of the options are a tad out of my price range :(. I have seen cheaper counters like this one Link2 on other websites, is this one any good? If not can someone recommend a frequency counter a bit closer to my price range? (i don't need ultra precision or anything)

That one looks fine. Why don't you get a function generator? Some have frequency counters built in. For frequency counting, I use this:

Its only up to 500khz, but any higher, my function generator is good enough.

I have a 2.4g counter here that works, its a bit dated now but still well within spec.

any use?

also have someone's homebuilt 200M LED counter..

The 2.4 gigahertz frequency counter sounds interesting. Do you know the part number or any of the specs?

I recommend you BUILD ONE ^^ hehehe Link2

I sincerely doubt you will need more then 50MHz capable counters from the get-go, so why not build a basic stable model to get yourself started.

Building one looks interesting. However I need one for my current project and my parents only let me work on one project at a time angry. I think there is some kits that might be on the cheep side though...

There is a universal counter kit available with 4XXX family chips and its a 3 digit counter. There is another kit which uses a microcontroller that is a 4 digit counter and you could use those kits with a similar timebase generator that I'm describing in the counter thread, but those will probably top out at a couple MHz.

You can buy multiple kits and link them together for more digits, but the kits do cost ~ $30 each, so it gets a bit expensive after a while.

But at least the info is available right ^^.

A lot of it's about money and quality - you can get a budget one like mine from Thurlby Thandar costing maybe $300, which is good for 99% of practical purposes, or you can pay $3,000 for an instrument from Rohde & Schwarz with fantastic accuracy and lots of very advanced facilities.
