a few months ago i filled in the sample request form on the Cornell dubilier website and requested 10x 942c20s33k-f capacitors.

i had a follow up call from one of the UK sales people, he said that they couldn't justify sending me 10 caps when my projected usage was so low, and that if i wanted to buy some to give him a call back. later that day i ordered some other caps from RS and used these to build my MMC tank capacitor.

yesterday i got home from work to find an international package had arrived, when i opened it up there were 10 nice new 942's inside amazed

Now i'm trying to think what i can use them for? any suggestions?

From what I understand, abusing the sampling system for hobby use is not well accepted here, nor should it be. If they sent you the samples knowing their true use, more power to you.

The sample system is really in place to flesh out a design before committing and buying thousands of a component that ultimately doesn't work.

Sampling is very discouraged on here because of several reasons. The company can find out and possibly get the forum in trouble. If to many people start using it for hobby use, it will ruin it for all of us and they will no longer sample to ANYONE! I personally am a little guilty of sampling but i don't come and start threads bragging about it. You may have got away with it this time but for the sake of all of us don't do it again....at least not cde

The company could just say no to his sample request. I don't see what's really wrong with sampling if they aren't forced to give you the parts you request. How would the company find out? I doubt they will spend the time to search for what their caps were used for. If one employee finds this, I doubt they will care enough to report it.

I apologise, I was not aware that this is not generally accepted around this fourum, when i filled out the enqury form I told the truth, about my intended use, I even had a long chat on the phone with the sales guy, I explained in detail the plans for the tesla coil, he was quite interested in what I was doing but then told me that he could not offer the samples as he didn't consider my future usage as a hobbyist would be adequate.

I do intend on building a larger modular mmc for my tesla coil and expect to be buying at least 100 caps from them in the next year, so I do not really see it as an abuse of the system, they did not have to send me free samples and after my talk with the sales person I did not expect any to be sent.

Sample topics really bring the worst in people...
Sampling is fine, as long as you don't make up a company and lie. It is pretty obvious to them when it is not a company. There are easy ways to find out if a address is residential, and hobbyists, when trying to deceive, put acronyms.

@teslacoolguy:
I seem to recall you saying you sent in 3 sample orders to separate addresses to get them =) My point is everyone has done it, and people will continue to do it, There is nothing wrong with it. A lot of companies also don't mind when students sample them, it offers a tiny bit of publicity, such as this thread =)

@Ryan
That usually doesn't happen to people, but I think they didn't outright send it to you since you are international.

The general attitude on this forum is not that sampling as a whole is wrong/bad/unacceptable. On the contrary, I think you'll find that a majority of people here sample at least occasionally (some parts just can't be had easily in small quantities any other way, and some are so expensive we wouldn't use them at all if they weren't free).

I also can't think of any way that the forum could be brought to legal trouble unless you were actually attempting to sell your samples here. He isn't, he just asked for opinions on how to use them.

Most members here emphasize sampling *responsibly*. My general outlook is, if you don't already have a specific use picked out for it, you don't need it, and you CERTAINLY don't need some inordinate number.

I once sampled some diodes from Onsemi years ago without really looking very carefully at the specs. I saw the voltage and the current, and grabbed the 20 I needed for a school project. When I received them, I realized that I had nearly $400 in parts. 2 days later, that same component had been limited to a maximum of 1 per sample. Some companies have stopped sampling all together because folks were sampling 20 or 40, using 2, then selling the rest at a tidy profit. THAT will get you run out of town on a rail around here.

I would say that perhaps it wasn't the best idea to sample so many with no purpose in mind, however, now that you've got them, you may as well put them to good use.

IF when you request samples, there is an option for "student" and you are a student, I have never found a problem there... they KNOW you are not going to get bulk NOW. The whole point they have "student", is so that when you graduate, when you buy parts for your company, you use the same supplier.

Instructables has a thread on many places to give samples.... it pisses me off because alot of people are like, "what do I put under business???"
Really??? Common.
It's just abused to much.

Dr. H. - I don't see any anger or bad behavior. Also this guy is new to this subject.
