Hi guys

there are some graphite conducting paints Link2 - do you think this will have low enough resistance to be used as a topload (spray an inner tire for example)

Actually - what is the resistance that coud be tolerated by the topload ?!?

Cheers

I think the resistence its not a thing that will be a problem, the problem is the conductive paint will made a rain of dust when you turn on the coil... (as I have already seen with a few Plastics with conductive paint at High Voltage)

If it is used on SS coil and breakout point is added I think it will not be a problem... maybe ...

Cheers

I've used a truck exhaust bend doughnut successfully. It's a spun steel toroid made in two halves, machine welded round the inside and outside of the major circumference and ground back to a smooth finish. When manufacturing custom truck exhausts sections are cut out of the toroid to provide the required bends in the exhaust system.

I welded a steel disc in the centre (the toroid has a doughnut hole) and had the whole thing nickel plated, mostly for show. Apparently they had trouble with it floating in the plating bath!

I just pulled the same trick, but I used an aluminum donut instead and brazed an aluminum disk in the center. The other side is a bit uglier, but it polishes out decently.

does anybody know where to find some instructions for how to spin an aluminum toroid? I have a few ideas but they involve a LOT of time and wasted metal.

Also, is there a cheap source for those exhaust donuts?

My quick-and-dirty topload torus is made of a piece of foam pool toy bent into a donut, covered with sticky foil tape, and burnished with a spoon. It works well and it's easy to insert wires for discharge points. The center support for the torus is a pyrex pot lid from a junk store that came with a nice metal rim to make good contact with the torus.

I fully understand those who like to build pro-looking coils and I love looking at them! As for me, I have difficulty explaining this hobby to my wife anyway, so am hedging my bets by using found materials when possible so as not to cause budgetary issues! I am ready if she gets too concerned-- thus: "I have no boat, guns, don't fish or dive, have no motorcycle, blah-blah.... How can you complain about a few lightning bolts in the garage?" Should work...

BTW I am a fan of litz wire for secondaries.

made from 2 cheap frying pans and some ducting. i am going to put some aluminum tape to make sure that the ducting is properly secured to the frying pans just waiting for the tape.
