Yay! An answer! Thanks, I guess that should be good enough. I suppose any tesla coil would have to be extremely overbuilt to last forever, well beyond hobbyist standards. But that begs the question, how exactly are professionally made tc's different from ours? Just better quality parts? .

Well, "Noone Lives Forever" (c) ;) Also, what you are refering as "professionally made tc's" seems to be mass-produced devices - there are no. However just to point it out - industrial-scale mass production is not something to look at as an example of a long-lasting device in the scales you expect - most devices meant for common usage have a lifespan of a few years at most; and by the way the point there is the component price, and TCs (purely unique enthusiastic projects) are far too expensive from what is called "optimal" in those terms.

I didn't really mean mass-produced. I meant like, the products of organizations with lots of funding, like one I read about that was trying to make a dual system the size of towers. Surely those are not meant to be played with for a couple years and then trashed :P. Granted, they weren't solid state... But still, they must be overbuilt. Oh well, I guess my kids'll have to make their own! Though I suppose I'd prefer that...
