Somebody has to keep people in line, otherwise signal:noise heads downhill. The same goes for the user base..

What kind of quantity of applications are you getting these days, Chris?

The only problem I have with the "Report to Mod" button is that, as a noob, even though I lurked for about a year, I don't feel I have the right to correct anyone on this forum. I just don't use it, because I try to be as inoffensive as possible. Would using the report button (as a noob) be useful? Would the mods prefer if we didn't?

The report button has the flaw that only the admin(s) get the message. It might be better to see if a mod is online and send a PM.

Personally I would like to know about rule violations and things that make members uncomfortable. I don't enjoy correcting rule violations. It is a hazzle and includes logging it on the moderators forum, but the alternative is worse. Most people use the existing posts as reference and will adapt the quality of their posting to that of the other posts in a thread.

That means that a single off topic rant often spawns a long string of the same.

I wasn't aware of that. I think mods should get PMmed, too, if anyone. Maybe it would be even better if the messages got posted on the mod board, then all mods/admins would know.

If you see something that's against the rules, no matter who posted it, you should feel free to speak to a mod. If I start abusing a board member, I support your right to complain about me.

Giving us feedback could sometimes really help. Knowing that a problem isn't just bugging me personally would make a difference in some borderline cases.
