Tests kinda would especially hurt members who might be dyslexic and of different language still trying to speak english well. My Idea would have a seperate forum for all the noobs and anyone who wants to join, learn the basics and safety, then come here when they are ready. This way you can also filter out the trolls before they come here.

Why does a test have to exclude noobs? It would just force them to spend a little time researching. I sure as heck would have looked up a bunch of stuff to be part of this forum. Maybe we could have an essay test. For example:
What is a capacitor? List two applications for this device. What does IGBT stand for? List three ways that high voltage can be hazardous to your health. etc, etc.
It doesn't have to be very hard, a quick review would indicate if someone was serious or not; and it could be somewhat more like an application.

The idea is for the system to be automagic. The pile of stale applications was proof that our system failed.
wrote ... Yeah, I think tests wouldn't be optimal either. They sure keep the asshats out, but also the noobs.
Not true. The asshat is the one who can't learn. He won't figure out the test. The noob may be dumb, but he can figure things out. He'll google the answers, and we'll let him in.
wrote ... What about stricter enforcing of the rules? LIke getting easier banned if you start pissing of other members?
That sounds like a good idea.

People HATE inqequality. Also, nobody but the newbies are going to want to read the newbie forum. A probation system might be a better choice, but it is likely that it would have to be hard coded into the forum software, and that's not going to happen.

Wouldn't the simplest answer be , not to keep out the socalled "asshats" but just to delete thier accounts as they make poor judgments about what they post? No matter what we do do keep out the bad, they'll stilll get in.....

Things have been a lot better lately. I used to have to deal with bad posts most days I logged on, now it's one or two posts a week.
I think if we have any test, it should have questions based on the rules and a question that can obviously be answered by a web-search.
Most of the bad posts and general low quality are due to people who didn't read the rules thoroughly enough and people asking web-search style questions. It would also make the moderating job a lot easier if we could assume that everyone has read the rules. Writing rule-quoting PMs isn't as exciting as you might think.

New users should read a good part of the forum to at least get an idea of how things are run here. Then post. How you ensure they do that I dont know. Could some rediculous posts (even entire threads) just be washed off at the same time as the culprit who inflicted it on us? Such as making nitro-glycerine? You gotta be kidding me! I dont even want to think of the danger I would have explored if there was an internet when I was a kid! (I most likely wouldn't be here to post). I have no web site, and probably will not for some time. This is the only place I have ever posted. Over the 3 incarnations of this board I've got to "know" and like alot of you cats. Usually the useless ones just dissappear. An online chat session with the applicant would certainly show their attitude and give you an indication of brilliance, B.S, or an acceptable medium. Although it would suck to tell someone "no you cant play here". Telling the buttheads to vacate would be somewhat better. Everyone here has probably made little errors, but very few posters have caused issues. So much for my 2 cents, Rich

Things are getting better, and the application volume is pretty low. I am content to handle the system privately for now. In the short-term, it gives me even less time to post here, but I think that in the long-term, it will end up saving me and all the other mods a lot of time.
I admit I am somewhat uncomfortable doing this in private, though. I know sooner or later someone will disagree with me, and make accusations that I'm a super secret Nazi elitist snob. Perhaps at some point, a few other people could come aboard, if only so that I have some oversight? All we really need to do is define what we expect in an application a little better, and I think we'll have a system that is usable for the foreseeable future.
