Maybe there could be a picture with a lot of mistakes (e.g. poor wiring, wires touching…) and the applicant would have to spot as many as possible and depending on what score they got would determine if they got in.

Geesh. I didn't realize how much of a problem this new user registration was.

My thoughts are that as long as someone is willing to learn and take part in discussions on this forum in a positive manner, then they should by all means be accepted.

Having a website or current project as a requirement for membership seems silly.

It's a self-solving problem. The less-well-intentioned/ignorant users make a pain of themselves and tend to get banned.

If you're a danger to yourself and others, it very quickly becomes apparent when you post!

It'd be nice to exclude 90% of the rubbish before the moderators have to act, however.

This is exaclty my point of view. I suppose that enough users make use of the "report this message to a moderator" feature, and therefore it should be fairly obvious for mods to spot people who are not welcome here and they coud give them the boot.

Of course some kind of written application would still be useful to prevent banned people from signing up again straight away, but it would not need to be as harsh. Having complicated tests and conditions really does not seem to be the way to go, since we do not want to keep noobs away, but idiots.

not to insult anyone but

"When playing with a MOT do you?

A. Hold the hot lead with pliers away from the bare wire
B. Hold the ground return with the pliers
C. Remember that you know nothing about HV so you don't do either A or B
D. Wear your goggles for safety
E. All of the above
F. None of the above"

wait....oh well...you get the point

I do not associate age with common sense (I'm well past 50 and not always sensible)
I do see a potential liability problem for 4hv if someone gets hurt
so I guess an age limit is in order - whtever the age of legal responsibility is
in UK and I believe US, less than 16 years old is a minor
so anyone under 16 needs parental/guardian approval.
I've had to approve my daughter's applications for online sites before now
so I don't see that as a problem.
(apart from kids trying to be their own parents!)

This legal liability thing is really an unknown to me
If I post wrong or incorrect advice, what is my and 4hv's liability?
Newbs not posting may cause us less frustration
but if they can still browse what's the difference?

i.e. although more frustrating it is better to give some method for 'Newbs' to ask questions.
Personally I'd give automatic registration for over 16s
and use enforcement, e.g.three 'bad' posts in a month and you're out!
This would apply to ALL members, new or old. (or even ancient like me)
P.S. my bad spelling doesn't count, OK?

With the website...anyone can just make up a website with geocities....I think there should be an idiot test. 1+1=11...something like that. cheesey

I dunno....Im a N00b, and Ive learned quite a bit from the few threads Ive posted...I took three years of electronics back in H.S. and Im in phys 2 in college now. I think Im qualified enough to take part in this forum. I think there should be a voting spot for each user. Other users vote on them depending what they think of the users, and if theres a large amount of bad things to say, that user has a chance to be kicked. But of course, that could be used in wrong ways...I say older users have a right to voice their opinion more that new users...I know that from experience. oh well, I like the current state as it is. tongue

Problem with having a test for entrance, that only really allows those who already know to join on. If you're wanting to learn and ask valid questions, you're kinda screwed.

Yeah, I think tests wouldn't be optimal either. They sure keep the asshats out, but also the noobs.

What about stricter enforcing of the rules? LIke getting easier banned if you start pissing of other members?

Feels like a students association *jells "Pi-Gamma_Delta"*
