/me complains about Dr Desmogod

I think Madgyver has it right, the old system was effective... but how many people does it take to approve the applications? Are there *really* that many, or did I just never notice them?

I'd happily wade through applications... it'd be an honour, but somehow I think there are more trusted/mature members who will be happy to/selected to do the job.

I wouldn't mind it either, but like BP said, I'm not always a sterling candidate. I forget and break the rules every now and then. neutral

We could post applications where reviewers who pass over could post comments on the prospective applicant, then the others would agree/disagree to let him in.

One way to "moderate the mods" would be to have a section on the user's profile that says "Let in by <insert mod here>" That way, we'd know if a certain mod is being ineffective; if he lets in too many losers.

That sounds, great. So the application process isn't anonymous anymore. (One coulnd't figure out, which let whom in)

Whatever is decided, I am all for it-Something definatly has to be put in place so that people just don't post about something that they can google for. This forum is a place for specific questions, as well as showing off projects that took more than a day to build- more ongoing projects. If we decide to do applications again, I'll help sort them out if thats needed- I think that people dorting them out should have at least been part of the old board though if that is the way we go. Also, longer applications would probably filter a lot of people that had one question about one thing, then are never to be seen again.

Just remember that the point of any application system isn't to block n00bs so much as to block those who won't add anything to the 4HV community.

Lots of people come here to learn; that's not the problem. The problem is those who come here to be abusive, blow themselves up or degrade the forum.

I agree, noob-blocking isn't entirely necessary, and I have to put my money where my mouth is: when I entered this community about, (errr, how long ago?), I was a noob. Ignition coils and that was it.

I'd like to imagine I'm far beyond that now partly as a result of this forum =)

Now I generally try (although I probably don't succeed) to help some of the newer members, e.g. questions like gatedriver layouts etc.

I really like the vote-for-an-app. idea where the appication would have to get some number of "let him in" more then "keep him out" votes. If it was open to just mods or all members I think it would be an effective way of filtering out any couldbe abusive or disruptive users.

I'm still a n00b.
I know it, so I mostly lurk. I'll probably still just be lurking when they turn the lights out...

It's a forum. The attitude on this forum, in my opinion, is usually hostile toward newcomers. People are immediately judged as "noobs" even if they have lightyears more experience than those that are judging them. Theres a handful of people who form a "ring" with eachother, and it's a very tough ring to join.
