funny concept: "Most likely to be killed by MOT gauge" right under their avitar. It would be a bargraph display from green to yellow to red. Others would be able to vote and review you, course...mine would probably be red cuz I think I annoy some of you guys.

I'm sure any number of people would volunteer for membership-monitoring commitments (i.e. checking/approving/rejecting/justifying an "applications" board). I can't really imagine that out of malice or ignorance, low-quality apps would go through. (With zero moderating experience and zero moment in this discussion) I'd guess it's a bad case of "Aww, I don't want to reject his application... just let it through."

Of course, as you've highlighted, the problem of 'monitoring the monitors' surfaces, but with well-selected moderators in the first place (i.e. not idiots like myself, or bastards like my other self) it wouldn't be a problem, surely?

Another idea that would make interesting discussion (but would be an impractical move) is the idea of a pay-for-membership forum. This somewhat filters minors (and misers like me =), offsets the hosting costs, but could have undesirable effects too.

Although I agree that charging for the service would deterr minors, it would make things difficult for people like myself who refuse a credit card. If enough people make comment about a user to a mod, then maybe something can be done. take that person aside, create a thread where we can put our opinions to that person, and see where it goes.
Or, for obvious blatant disregard for the rules, just delete the user account.

The number of people signing up is not the problem, but on a given day 9 out of 10 people does not show up when it becomes clear that it is tiresome and boring.

We have almost 20 moderators but their combined effort was not able to cope with the influx of new members. What we learned from the last application process is that shared responsibility does not work well. Chris is moving in the right direction with a few dedicated people on the job so the blame would be easy to hand out when the job is not done properly. The question is if anyone is willing do the job, it is a thin line to balance and you may end up with everyone being unhappy with your effort.

I'd do it :P
Never afraid of copping a bit of flack!
And no, it's not a volume issue, but more like an attitude issue.

Let them select themselves.
Make an online test, with a few tens of questions about electricity, safety rules and a warning with "i agree/dont agree' button. If they dont know anything about HV they just will learn to complete the test. Depending the score/number of points gained through the test, they are automatically rejected or accepted, just hiting the "Finish" button. If they fail, the test page will not accept never the same ID. In this way it is not need to have individuals to read all the aplications.

Or accept as learners all the applicants, but only the people that have already a good project can participate at the forum. The project has to be at least half realised, with well documented explanations. This will allow only the knowledgeable people to post here. The others can read the post and ask questions only in a restricted area of the forum.

I was on the old application team (and would do it again, if you let me).

From what I see, the big weakness of this process is that on the old board the decission was made by one mod alone. Some realy nasty applications went through, which made clear that the ones writing them, haven't read the rules completly, or didn't understand them or didn't care.

I think applications would be good, but we need a system were 3 mods or so have to decide as a team.

That seems like a good idea madgyver. I reckon we could create an applications forum, make each wannabe user post an application with a poll attached to it, then the moderating team (and maybe any other existing 4hv users too) could use the poll to vote on whether the user should be allowed in.

If polls are a problem, we could use nominations. So the wannabe user creates his post and he needs to get 10 replies from unique existing users (or maybe moderators only) saying "Let him in" before we give him write permissions to the rest of the board.

I think the applicant should have to give references to work he has done in the past: either a website he has built, or stuff he has posted on other forums. That way we can see a track record. Unless that causes too much hassle with figuring out that the applicant really is who he says he is.

What about current (no pun intended) users?
I'm sorry, but I see a few very unsafe things being bandied about.

If you have a problem with anything, complain to the moderating team, and if we get enough complaints we'll take action.
