Would there be a timeline on the "10 post trial" Or might it be better to have a set time limit (2-4 weeks?) in which they must post something useful?
I don't want to be out of line, cause I'm new. However, opening up the applications for a brief period allowed me to join(and hopefully contribute usefully), whereas before I just lurked. Maybe some other people who may not have applied before were able to join and will help bring some new ideas/projects to this board. Fresh blood can be a good thing...but certainly not always.

We definitely need a rest period for new members -- we have a ton of new blood, now it's time to see who can stick around.
I wish we could go back to the old application system, but as Bjoern pointed out... nobody has time to review applications, and it's tough to nail down what is and isn't a good application. The quality control on the old system was terrible. People on the outside noticed this. I got quite a few comments about it in my email.
We're still looking at automated systems right now. If that doesn't work out, I plan on having just a few dedicated people who review applications, as well as making the application quite a bit longer, so as to ensure we only end up spending time and effort on people who REALLY want to be members.

Matt, I love ya man, but I have do disagree with you on the age limit. If you look, there'd be some REALLY good members who would have to leave. I would have been one of them a year ago. BTW, if I get something wrong in a post, or am just being annoying, don't hesitate to correct me. It won't hurt my feelings as long as your are halfway nice about it.
Polling and trial posting might be a good idea, but who's going to take care of that? Even if I was on the acceptance team, I'd probably never pay attention to it after awhile. If we went the polling route, I doubt people would go vote several times a week on people they don't even know. Not to say it's a bad idea though.
I do have to say that I have enjoyed very much the enviroment here and I hope it continues. I personally liked the application system, but I've never been on the moderator side of it. I'd still take time.
What about having a time frame in which the applicant can't post anything?? This way, they could sign up themselves, then have to watch what's going on for two weeks. Somewho's here just to ask a question and leave won't wait that long, he'll go elsewhere. If he's serious, he'll stay. And, we don't have to have people wasting their time reviewing postings or applications. ???

Peer review would be the ideal situation, and having people lurking and learning how and what to post would be the ideal process. Chris, is this site capable of polls?

I was thinking about the poll process, how do people get terminated? Does a mod do it?
Basically, what I'm saying is, we could have them join, hang around and not get to post for a while, then when they do get to post, if a mod gets X amount of *reports* then that applicant warned and then is terminated?

I'd rather have member 'trial periods' than a single interveiw and single moderator evaluation.
Umm, I just signed up here like 7 days ago and I never went through any interview process. Does this mean I'm actually some sort of pseudo-member and don't know it? I hope that by mentioning this I don't have my member status revoked or anything.

If you're not happy about kids playing with deadly high voltage, make a suggestion to 4hv that there be a minimum age of 18.
I'm 18 and I'm just as safe as I was 2 years ago. About as safe as my 17 year old comrades(who are some very safe fellows if I do say so myself). Turning 18 isn't like hitting the sound barrier for responsibility.

I know the age minimum doesn't mean much, but consider how advice is given to minors for a moment. Here they can have things suggested to them which, if they don't follow 100% can lead to hospitilizaton or death. Not to mention there is little or no mention from advisors to get the parents involved!
Consider how we all started out, plugging things into the wall behind our parents backs. I was doing this with AC motors and mercury switches at 11yrs old.
I really think that if a minor and member of 4HV is to persue HV dreams and dangerous projects there should be some supervision suggested and not just 'oh go do this'.
BUT that's entirely up to you guys. I'm just here trying to contribute and take measurements and validate theories and such, that's why I joined.

To be honest, I don't know what the best application system would be but I know we need something other than automatic registration.
Whatever replacement we come up with gets my full support, whether or not I think it's optimum.

It's okay, you're safe. The last "old blue" board had an application system. Anyone who wanted to be a member had to submit a written application that was reviewed by a mod. That did a pretty good job of keeping the wrong sort out but was unwieldy.
This new board has had automatic registration. You push a few buttons and you're on.
One idea was to have a multiple choice quiz on the rules for anyone who wanted to sign up.

I like the app process with a couple of dedicated reviewers. only a certian number of apps are reviewed per day. When an applicant does become a member its a provisional membership for a small time span. Put some sort of ID next to their name. Then we can all watch their behavior. If they are idiots we can report them to the mod team, the mods can review and make a decision to remove them, maybe a 3 strikes kind of thing. If they are good members and contribute to the forum then after the initial probation period they become full members.

I really like this approach. I was on the review team from the last board and was able to tell when one person was an idiot, or someone truely interested in learning. Most people were new, but honestly were looking for a good place to begin, while others were just irritating Id really like to have some sort of Identifier next to a new members name and if they turn out to be an asshat, im sure the moderation team will get plenty of "friendly" reports.
