are there any clear types of paint?

That's what I was thinking. A friend of mine wanted to build a secondary with a color scheme and I was wondering if there were any kind of translucent colored paints.

Thanks,

Christopher

If you want a black secondary, just wrap it in black electrical tape. Works for other colours of electrical tape too, green and yellow stripes anyone? smile

Just my opinion, but I think leaving a clear coat on always impresses everyone when they see how many turns are on each coil. They also ask me " You seriously wound this by hand??? You're crazy!!"

I think that what we want is a transparent finish so that the people that look at the secondary close-up can still see the amount of hard work that went into winding it, while also having the effect of a cool design on the finish. Electrical tape works, though, if you're trying to just make it into one color (but I can't help but ask myself - what's the point of that?). Thank you for the info, though, Steve.

I paint secondaries with black spray paint (krylon) all the time, I've never had any problems. I also use black epoxy from time to time with no issues.

Hehe, no idea in fact - I coated mine without applying any varnish beforehand with black spraypaint, unfortunately I can't recall the exact type of one, but it was a pretty cheap can I found on a local market. It had no impact on the performance I could notice, also the paint proved to withstand the major heating of the coil itself along with a few flashovers it survived. I didn't see any DRSSTC and SGTC projects with secondaries coated that way though, but this one, being a generic full-wave-rectified-fed ISSTC that has a pretty high dv/dt and breakouts reaching 65cm vs 38cm secondary, seems to be very close to the DRSSTC conditions, therefore the paint should work well on other coil types as well.

My DR-2 secondary (8"x48" cardboard form) was recently refinished due to falling to the pavement and dinging it all up. I sanded down the original urethane varnish, gave it 3 layers of fiberglass/epoxy and then after sanding that, gave it a coat of "rustoleum safety blue" spray paint. Still works great delivering over 10' sparks from the 45" winding. The fiberglass provides excellent strength mechanically and electrically. Id suggest it for any coil that will be beat up on a lot, like this one is for doing shows quite often.

BTW, im not sure if this is completely accurate, but i checked the MSDS for the particular paint i used for any metallic-based chemicals and did not find any. The black rustoleum did contain carbon-based pigments, but apparently krylon has black paint that isnt carbon based (or if it is, it doesnt matter).
