The aforementioned have contributed financially to the continuing triumph of 4hv.org. They are deserving of my most heartfelt thanks.
hello all, in the process building my drsstc II was just wondering about painting the secondary. i was thinking of using matt black standard spray paint, but just had a thought it might effect the coil... any ideas?

Your thought is correct, most paints contain colourants that conduct electricity. You need a clearcoat on a solvent basis that doesn't dissolve the enamel on your wire.
Polyurethane floor varnish works well. Or almost any thin epoxy clear coat.

There is a point at which you can simply stop coating it in polyurethane and put on a colored coat, as lon as it doesn't near the edges of the coil (the top and bottom). This may create some weakness in insulation, but not a great deal, if you do more than one coat of polyurethane after you do the coat that 'feels like glass'. I may be completely wrong here, but it shouldn't be a terrible insulation fault.
okay do you mean the paint has to stop before the coil? what about some sort of cover over it. the massive one in mythbusters had a cover, (lightning lab) thought it looked pretty cool really like that top load as well.

If you put your secondary inside another plastic pipe and paint that pipe instead then insulation should not be a problem. However i dont know how that will affect cooling and coupling.
Camoulflage pattern would be kinda neat, right? Or that diagonal black/yellow warning pattern.

Just my opinion, but I think leaving a clear coat on always impresses everyone when they see how many turns are on each coil. They also ask me " You seriously wound this by hand??? You're crazy!!" I think it is pretty impressive but do whatever you like :)
