Different salts give the colours due to atomic emission. You can find a good list here:
Note that sodium tends to overpower *everything*, so even if you have a strong amount of copper (blue) applied to a breakout point which might have traces of sodium from a previous run, you will get a mix of blue/orange.
As for getting samples of salts, you might want to try begging some chemistry profs who run the inorganic chemistry lab courses at your college/university. You only need really small samples to saturate whatever you will use to carry the salt sample.

One way to get them REALLY concentrated is to dip the breakout point in the salt solution, allow the salt to dry (with the breakout point hanging upside down, over the salt solution, hopefully, so that any drips are caught) don't rinse, repeat. This will allow you to get LOTS of dissolved salts to crystallize or do whatever they do on the end of the breakout point. If you want to make it faster, use a super-saturated solution (if the salt won't crystallize when super-saturated).
