This is a good point.
Also, bear in mind that if someone has a weapon and actually intends to use it on you, they don't tend to give the game away by showing it to you first. They lose the surprise advantage, and witnesses might see it. So if you get in what was called an "armed fight", and your opponent is any good, then you won't realize you're in an "armed fight" until you've already been stabbed or shot.
If your attacker does take the weapon out and brandish it before they're close enough to use it on you, it's probably a show of force intended to scare you off, and they probably don't intend to use it. You can end the confrontation right there by backing down and making a sharp exit, which you should be able to do: if you're aware of what's going on, you won't have allowed yourself to be cornered.
For anyone wishing to take up a martial art for self-defense, I'd recommend soccer. Run, kick balls, and when the referee, erm, cops show up, dive on the ground in mock agony

Fighting would have done no good to anyone. You should not have stopped for them. I found many of them in my city, nearly every week whenever I am driving late at night on my scooter
Just get slow but when a you get a bit close, suddenly pick up the speed with you head downwards.
what this does is scares them coz they think you will hit them rather than they hitting you.
It has always worked for me tested many tmes :)
