My current Tesla project uses a aluminum foil clad polystyrene sphere as topload:

Vttc2 First Streamer

Everywhere else toroids are used. I can't find a comparison between a sperical and toroidal topload. Why is this? Why should I build a toroid?

For use as a topload on a Tesla coil, a properly-sized toroid has several advantages over a sphere, primarily due to better "shaping" of the electrostatic field around the topload:

1. A toroid provides better "shielding" of the top turns of the secondary. As you crank up the output of a TC with a spherical topload, you will get lots of corona (and eventually arcing) from the top secondary turns.

2. A toroid will generally tend to direct streamers away from the secondary, reducing the potential for "self-strikes" that can damage or destroy the secondary.

Herr Zapp:

This makes a lot of sense, and is very helpful. When I've figured out the primary of my project above I no doubt will run into exactly the problems you describe.

Many thanx!

A TV is indeed zappy, especially if you attemt to clean it with a wet towel, I have learnt the hard way...

Wow, we're getting really OT..... anyways, if you like, you can change your username in the login settings. They're on the left side of the screen above your message inbox.

With a toroid you will also have a larger surface, so you would need a large sphere to bring down resonance to the same frequency as you would only need a rather small toroid to do so.

For a VTTC or a solid state Tesla coil I don't think it matters as much whether you use a sphere of a toroid. The toroid might be a little better but they are harder to make.
