I run Windows XP on my laptop and always keep it updated. I use Windows Firewall and have a router Hardware firewall. I haven't used antivirus/antispyware software for over a year and I haven't been infected once. I scan every 3 months or so, and recently did so to ensure I didn't get the conficker virus either. I really think if you are careful and safe on the internet antivirus software isn't essential. Unfortunately many computer users are idiots so it is absolutely necessary for them.

As long as you don't look at 'naughty' things (we all know what I'm talking about, but I'm not sure if we're allowed to mention it in the forums) or download illegally, you're very unlikely to get any kind of virus, considering that most viruses can't upload unless you tell your computer to upload them. Common sense will keep you from getting any moderately detectable virus.

A bit more off-topic, Mike, having lots of posts just goes to show that you

A: Post with little warrant;

or

B: Can't describe what you're trying to say as intimately as necessary.

What I have said previously is why I believe that anybody who participates in any form of political election or vote should be required to take a literacy test and pass before being given the opportunity to submit their opinion. It should be the same on 4HV; a test that is required to be taken by all members with the benchmark being set at the lowest score of any commonly-contributing member.

I'm glad this topic is in General Chatting, since I would probably be reprimanded for this comment if it weren't!

;)

To clarify my response, I worked as a computer tech for Circuit City (yes it was terrible) and I was merely saying that most the people I encountered infected themselves because of stupid reasons...I was never saying anyone here was stupid...

REMOVED. Maybe I should be a candidate for required reading comprehension tests! hehe amazed

Edit: I just noticed I set my sig saying "Having lots of posts doesn't make you wise." So now I'm wondering if PlasmaLover was responding to that and not criticizing me... If that is the case, my apologies for my hot reaction.

In response to PlasmaLover, I am not quite sure what I did to you but I was merely stating my 2 cents. I think what you said was pretty harsh and very unwarranted. And on another note, since when do I have a lot of posts? Besides "a lot" being completely relative, there are many users with well into the thousands of posts. I have been here for quite a while (much longer than you it would seem...) and I think one of the best parts of this forum is the lack of personal attacks. I hope you can conform to that standard as well.

I'm sorry, that wasn't meant as a personal attack. Allow me to clarify:

What I said in response to you, that you apparently took as a personal attack, was based on your signature. Your signature says "Having lots of posts doesn't make you wise.", and I was simply stating that you are very correct in saying that, and giving examples.

I'm sorry for any unhappiness or anger that may have caused you; I wasn't attempting to be confrontational.

Next time I'll make sure to be more clear.

You see? If I were more clear, I'd have fewer posts! ;)

PlasmaLover, sorry haha! I noticed that is what my signature said after I was looking at my post and wondered if you were responding to that.. I apologize as well for my reaction! Anyways, we should get back to topic before they kick us out!
