If conficker only supposed to run on april 1st, or start running april first?

From what I can tell, it will start running on April 1st and then continue to spread among other computers. I'm sure that the master machine will continue to distribute the virus, probably through its infected slaves.

Well, me thinks i am especially at risk. I do not have a genuine copy of windows.

This Windows automatic update keeps trying to update my computer. It wont stop no matter what. I just open task manager and make them stop. At one point, i had like 10 of them running! That was in a few minutes. I can open that site though. I use Avast! professional atm. Currently running a virus scan. On the task bar, there are 4 of the automatic update things open. Might this mean something?

I guess I get to see if McAfee is worth a #$%^ then.

I've been running Norton for years and McAfee for a couple of years now and I think for the most part they are worthless/useless. PC Tools Spyware Doctor was able to remove/find things that Norton didn't see, unfortunately their website sucks now and I can't really download a working copy, so its not much better then the other two.

Norton has been horrendous for us... it repeatedly blocked it's own updater program, and forcing an update would not always work. Then right after I got a worm, which replicated itself over 50,000 times on my computer before I could get norton to do anything about it, I decided I had had enough, and I fgot a copy of McAffee... I never had a problem with it

However, due to an unrelated issue, that computer crashed and I ended up getting a laptop at the time, so I never reinstalled windows on that computer until the Windows 7 Beta came out, now it runs Ubuntu and Windows...

Anyways, after repeatedly telling my parents to avoid it, they gave the laptop to Geek Squad to "Optimize" the computer... spent a good amount of time undoing to damage they did: first, they assumed I wanted Trend Micro instead of asking me, so my McAffee subscription went to waste, but it is a good antivirus
but the main issue they caused is not only that they installed a lot of performance hogging, useless software, they enabled Trend Micro to automatically, and without warning, scan any computer on the network (which, Windows on the other machines will refuse to block) and it will simply restart the connection and start scanning again if I stopped it manually, well since it did not identify itself in any manner discernible, it used a ridiculous number of ports, multiple connection types, was going through ALL of the files, giving itself Administrator privileges, I assumed it was an attack on my server (which has happened before) and I had to take drastic action (which I was fine with since I was replacing the server in a few days anyways)... so I disabled a lot of services, but after it still kept coming, I had to turn off key things: and those could not be re-enabled after disabling, even in safe mode - e.g. the user interface and Network stuff was toast.
so while your antivirus may seem to be working, realize that there is a good chance that some little detail is going to cause huge issues, like enabling an Antivirus to take action or telling it to "put it on a list, and don't bug me about it"... every one of these programs has an advantage, but only if used right

and I'm afraid I have rambled, if a mod wants to, he may delete that anecdote about the server/antivirus issue...

I use avast.

McAfee is a million times better than Norton, but they are both ripoffs IMO.

It'll be interesting to see what exactly Conficker does...

I downloaded Avast and it stopped my internet from working, a page would load but not show anything (strangely, gmail worked). Thus it blocked its own registration. 60 minutes also had a section on conficker c tonight.

That's odd, did you removed your previous antivirus program entirely before installing?

Conficker freaks me out. Im running an updated version of Norton Internet Security, and on a search this morning it only found a few low-risk tracking cookies. But the free windows search mentioned earlier in this thread is currently running, it'll be interesting to see what it sniffs out. I'll leave it running through the night, it wount be finished in hours and i need sleep.

I'd like to skip Norton and install Avast, but i have recently paid for a full year of Norton.

Lol, that was my first thought. Apparently it starts April first, and continues from there.

I'm just unplugging my internet connection Tuesday Night, until I see what happened Wednesday Afternoon...
