What is really stupid is politicians bringing in laws that make things "safer". I heard a few years ago that they banned in the US a whole bunch of chemicals from being sold to the public, things that couldn't be used to make high explosives. Most of them where chemicals used in fireworks. I also heard on the news that some guy was arrested for terrorism because his landlord found some chemicals in his back shed. The guy was doing his PHD on chem at the time
In short people freak out at the smallest things and as someone said, things they don't understand

Frankly, if someone wants to do something with huge intentions, there going to find a way. These just prevent honest people from pursuing there interest.

According to Jack Straw, celebrated author of "Tales from the Terror Factory," terrorists have such cunning that the entire 10,000 man effort of the Manhattan Project can now be condensed into a device assembled on the kitchen table above an Indian restaurant, with materials obtained from local shops. "Millions" in Britain are living under threat of death from such dire plots, he tells us, which seems to me to be ten times greater than Hiroshima and Nagasaki combined.
I gladly accept that even my rubbish bin must be kept under constant surveillance to thwart threats to our 'national security.' How could our dear leaders not have all our best interests at heart?

This is all propaganda created by our own governments to coerce us into giving them more power over us. "Absolute power currupts absolutely", no? The more power they get, the more they want. They tell us all this BS because the masses of people have average IQ. By deffinition, that aint good at all! It means most the people cant think all that well and rely on "them" to spoon feed them and guide their lives.
The common man hears that a suitcase can act as an atom bomb and freaks out, giving Mious Imperium to his rulers. The thinker looks up information about radiation and finds that that idea is absurd. The common man is told sweet lies by a ruler and worships him for it, then damns someone that speaks harsh reality. Our current ways of life cater to laziness and indulgence. We are basically being turned into Kobe (spelling?) beef.
Instead of excelling at difficult things, people just want to sit around and do drugs. Our current ways of life are like opium, and he that preaches opium to the masses gets the nod these days...

Well, as long as the majority is happy, that's all democracy ever promised to deliver. Even an ideal democracy and free market can only deliver the will of the people who do the majority of the voting and spending, and like it or not, that's Mr. Average.
A system like this does not guarantee the will of minorities. Because of the economies of scale in mass media and mass production, you have a situation where *everyone* gets what the majority wanted. And that's in an ideal system. In actual fact, it's more like everyone gets their tax dollars spent on what some bunch of politicians wanted: CCTV, Operation X-Stan-Freedom and so on.
If people like us find the state of society dumb or scary, that's arguably our problem. Much as I'd like to ban TV and hand out free Tesla coils to every home, I know I'd get lynched and the people would get their MTV back, after toppling Steve McStalin and his evil Tesla coil regime. And again, that's what would happen in an ideal system.
I know my link is broken, and can't figure out how to fix it. I suspect it's some anti-code-injection thing in the forum software, that chokes on the brackets in the URL. I wrote to my MP to complain.

I gave up all hope of re-ordering society years ago, and now confine myself to tyrannizing over electrons and forcing them to obey my will. Unfortortunately, the less lazy among them often do not always do what they are told
