found this posted online... though you guys might want to see it
the person in question ordered some peculiarly large magnets, and had them fly about twenty inches and smash his finger... here is the link:

Warning: the link contains graphic images and should be viewed with caution!

Actual link: Link2

Essentially, a large 75mm diam, 70mm long cylinder, and a 50mmx50mmx100mm brick (both N45) had their poles aligned from 50cm (20") away, and his finger got caught. The finger bone was smashed, and his fingernail was removed, intact. His hand required surgery and its a bloody (no pun intended) mess.

I have a large 2"dia 1"thick N50 disk and I always thought it was capable of something like this... that's why I keep the smaller 1" ones stored separately and never take them all out at the same time.

And those pics are really f***ing gross

OWWWWWWW!!!!

I guess that means that magnets like this will require a waiver before purchase and maybe even a data sheet that details critical distances for the magnets, eg. safe distance and hazard distance.

the company I plan to get one from for a project requires that someone at least 21 years old, with ID, has to sign for it, and that it be shipped via ground, etc...
I took another look at their site, and they added a story about someone losing an entire hand from these types of magnets... strong stuff...

Yeah, I had heard about that story from unitednuclear. Yet another freak accident with super strong magnets... dead

I've never handled any magnets nearly that powerful, but I can certianly see how dangerous those really are. A good word of advice for anyone thinking of purchasing one (or more) just to play around with: don't.

Nasty, I once saw somone cut their finger of by crushing half of it in a door, I never messed around with doors again (I was 12 at the time). This looks almost as nasty, I had no idea perminent magnets are powerfull enough to do this. How can so much energy be stored in the magnet? I'd think they'd lose strength really fast.

Molecular scale domains lining up IIRC. Best analogy is like the cells in an electric eel producing kilovolts when each modified muscle cell generates 100+ mV

Those pictures were unnecessarily gross. I could have gone without seeing them....

What would you do with such large magnets anyway? The only thing I can thnk of are weird eddy current experiments. I guess you could make a sucky alternator with them.
