Do you think it would be possible to ship it to Australia? I've got a feeling that customs won't like it
Yeah, with the guy getting twenty years in prison for putting pigeons in his socks and bringing them to Australia, I doubt that they're going to let a radioactive mineral come all the way into their country.

I honestly doubt it will be a problem. Very little gamma from these pieces, and the Unites States postal service regulations say 70 CPM gamma at the surface of the package is allowed to be shipped in normal ways. I will get the beta down no problem, and there isnt 70 CPM gamma from these pieces, only in rare occasions.

Cs-137 is water soluble and highly toxic.
Cs-137 is top of the international nuclear materials "terror" watch list, and can be expected to be detected remotely even in small quantities by the gamma ray spectrometers now fitted at ports and customs posts.
I think Dowload is absolutely right to suggest that there might be a problem importing even small quantities of Cs137-bearing 'trinitite' into Australia.

I would probably agree that while shipping domestically within the US will be no trouble at all, getting it through customs without causing some kind of stupidity meltdown somewhere in the process will be more problematic.
I would attempt to contact an Australian customs office and ask about shipping mineral samples such as trinitite that exhibit radioactivity. Getting shot down right out of the gate would be a whole lot better than attempting it and causing a huge hassle or worse.

Ive mailed very hot uranium ores into Australia just fine, and I am not talking this low level stuff. I dont know what kind of meter your using, but I have sent in stuff that makes geiger counters buzz, not beep. 30,000CPM sort of stuff. Also, the USPS allows 10mR/Hr (this is a gamma measurement) from the surface. 70CPM is not a measure for gamma radiation. That is a counter specific measure for gamma+beta+ alpha radiation. 10mR/Hr is pretty significant. Id say your worrying way too much about this. Trinitite is extremely weak stuff (only value is for its historical significance). You would need a pretty sensitive probe to detect it under alot of packaging.
As to proving its authenticity: you cant without some papers that usually come along with it that has been handed down since it was first collected. If you had a spectrometer, or another way of detecting Cs-137 then you could bet it to be real. Awhile back, I heard of someone melting sand and scattering uranium ore (crushed up) into this molten sand. After hardening, it looked like trinitite and responded to a geiger counter as well... Actually, to truly authenticate trinitite, its needs to be run under nuclear energy spectroscopy. Any old radioactive material will trigger a geiger counter.
In particular, you want a Cesium 137 peak measurement of around 660keV.
If you acquired a large amount of this material, you should have an authenticating certificate.

Australian radioactivity importation regulations are set province by province, but are unlikely to differ much to those of the United Kingdom, which are as follows:
An exemption level for NORM is 2.59 becquerel per gram for solid thorium and 11.1 becquerel per gram for solid uranium, with defined quantity based on the Radioactive Substance Law (RSA93) that was established in 1993. Substances that are exempted as exception include phosphate and rare-earth elements or natural radioactive elements, solid/liquid matters each of whose element concentrations does not exceed 14.8 becquerel per gram and alloys whose concentration do not exceed 37 becquerel per gram. Furthermore, phosphate fertilizer, geological samples, uranium/thorium and lead are conditionally exempted.
Whether 'trinitite' could be considered as a 'geological sample' seems open to question.
I would expect a spectrometer alarm to be triggered by its emission spectrum profile.
