Questions about plasma speaker circuit

I have some (stupid) questions about the following circuit. I don’t fully understand it.

Vd = 30V


1a) What are back-to-back zeners?
1b) Did I connect them right?

2) 1uF foil. I think that foil means some type of capacitor. What is so special about foil capacitors compared to “normal” capacitor?

3) My gate drive transformer is an 80mm^2 ferrite donut core. How many turns do you recommend?

4) What is Vs? Vd will be 30V. So what is Vs?

5) How big should the capacitors C1 and C2 be with Vd=30V

6) What should be the rating of the MOSFETs? I have no idea what the expected supply current is.

1) Put two zener diodes in "anti-series" and connect in parallel with the gate.
2) this means 1 microfarad film or foil capacitor (non-polar).
3) try 20 turns at first. Oscilloscope is essential to check if the waveform on the gates is close to square wave.
4) Someone saved my circuit before I fixed it smile it is the same, I was just renaming "Vs" do "Vd" because for MOSFETs it is Vd. It's the same supply voltage. Check here. Link2
5) I would say around 10000uF/25V if your suply is not smoothed, less if it is (probably will work down to 1000uF or less with low-ESR caps)
6) breakdown voltage of 55-100 volts (lower is better) and current rating of ~50A or more, they are pretty cheap.

A colleague explained to mo how zenerdiodes work. After that explanation I draw this circuit. I think this is what you are trying to tell me.

Put two of them in series "back to back", because the signal from the GDT is symmetric. The way you drew it, it would short the negative signal and damage the driver.

Back to back… I still don’t understand it. What is the “back” of a zenerdiode? I made another drawing.

I have drawn two options. Which one is the one that you are trying to tell me? Is there a difference between them anyway (the way I placed the zenerdiodes).

You got it smile it doesn't matter which way you put them. Both are correct.

Edit: This circuit can become quite explosive if not set up and tuned properly. I'd say it's NOT a project for a beginner, and if you have any problems with the circuit, you probably will need an oscilloscope.

I’m going to buy an oscilloscope anyhow. It is very annoying if you can’t measure signals. Then you will never understand how it all works and whats going on.

Because they usually have lower ON resistance > less heating.

how does a 100mm^ 2 toroid translate to imperial measurements? what's the ID and OD?

having a hell of a time digging up a conversion on that...

edit: nevermind, got my answer in the chatroom... sounds like it's aobut 1.4 od, .9id and .5 ht.

equals a cross section of round about 1cm.

sound right?
