I've actually had very good luck in making my own aluminum powder by putting aluminum foil in a blender filled with water and letting it run on high for several minutes. You can then pour off the "gray water" and let the aluminum powder suspended in it settle to the bottom before adding water and blending again. Any of the powder that suspended should be at least 400 mesh.
You must fill the blender with water though, otherwise you risk a flash fire during blending

I find Copper Oxide thermite bizarre. It acts as an explosive when in a compressed state in open air. Thats right - if you take a 1/2 cup worth of the material and pack it down tight - when lit it will cause an explosion. KABOOM!! The concussion is quite something experience!

Aluminium powder is best made in a ball mill, using steel milling media. The ball mill must be opened periodically during milling to allow Aluminium oxide to build up on the Aluminium particles (called passivation) , else there is a severe fire risk. Aluminium is a highly reactive metal.
I strongly advise against using other oxides/metals in Thermite mixes, until you have become more familiar with it, as several are highly explosive, and will self confine/detonate even in relatively small amounts, often spontaneously.
