There is a bug in the ShadowWorld CGI-IRC client that users should be wary of (and it seems many of you are aware of). If you are disconnected or exit by simply closing your browser window, it is very likely that your nickname will live on.

Yesterday we had a user with 4 names all persisting on the server for more than 90 minutes after he was disconnected from them. They return pings, show up when queried, and receive private messages. This can lead to an invasion of headless clients showing up with similar nicknames in the chat room.

Please exit the client by typing /exit or /quit before closing your browser window.

ShadowWorld staff is aware, and I can hope they're working it.

The chatroom might be repaired but the content is broken. The participants wallow in mediocrity and fringe lunacy, not because they are not capable of more but because it is easy. You can respect someone that does their best, you can't respect someone that never tries.

This screenshot is not the low point of any 24 hour period, some days this would be average.

As a moderator and channel op, I must apologize for the gutter tone of #hvcomm. Steps have been taken to ensure it won't happen again: we reported Dale to PETA and they took his sheep harem away.

Hopefully it won't scare away some people, #hvcomm is a good place to ask about smaller things that would be a waste of thread space :)

It really shouldn't scare people away. All your seeing is the natural instinct to turn any form of communication into /b/ whenever a serious conversation isn't present.

Boredom is always a catalyst for trouble making.

Mass boredom is how riots and wars start. I would like to ask chat participants to keep things relatively civil. There is nothing wrong with goofing around and straying from the topics relevant to this forum, it is meant to be a more casual atmosphere.

However, when your topic of discussion would make a hardened 4chan veteran cringe...you might be crossing a line. Remember we have members as young as 11 and 12 logging in, and we have had parents forbid members from participating in the chat room before after seeing some of the banter that was going on.

I am as big an offender in this regard as any one. I'm a foul mouthed, hot headed troll when given an opportunity, but I will be making a concerted effort to avoid such behavior in the future in #hvcomm.

If some one would like to create another chat room on ShadowWorld for more....controversial conversation, I think many of the chatroom residents would participate. As long as it isn't the room that is directly accessed from the front page of our forum, it removes a certain degree of guilt by association, and gives people a means of participating in the chat without being bombarded with extremely vulgar (if often hilarious) banter.

Well, #hvcomm-ot has been created for this purpose, any discussion beyond the scope of #hvcomm (but still within the network guidelines!!) should take place here now.

#hvcomm: IEEE meets /b/

cheesey

Hvcomm-ot actually seems to be working well, despite my initial predictions of the whole thing collapsing.
