You can get UF400X Series, that are ultrafast and are not much expesive, I used before a UF5408 on a 100Khz SMPS, and it worked fine, and the voltage drop still at 0,6V.
The 9V Batery is 2500mAh so short current is more than 2,5A.

Yes, as the Mestre says, you can find the fast version of the famous 1N4007 - the UF4007 - at about ten for an American dollar on ebay. Strings of those should work well.

Normal MN1604 9V batteries do certainly not have a capacity of 2500mAh. Here is the datasheet of a standard 9V alkaline, with a stated capacity of 600mAh if you draw 25mA from it, less if you draw more.
