We've come to the conclusion that an SSTC will be more suitable for a design project, and we should have plenty of support from the college for getting parts.
We favor the DRSSTC-1 design by Steve Ward, because I have seen it work in person, and it's rather impressive and versatile.
The theory is a bit daunting, but I am confident that we can learn it. I am still a little bit confused as to what components there are to a DRSSTC, and what similarities there are to a SGTC. As far as I can tell, there is a driver circuit and a power circuit (which includes the primary coil), and the driver circuit takes input from mains AC (primary). The interrupter is what controls the timing of the sparks (and any modulation).
Correct me if i'm wrong...
Thanks for all the info. We are very determined, and will use maximum safety measures. I'm sorry if i'm asking obvious questions, I just want to be sure of the basics.
