If you want to hand draw the PCB, never use a permanant marker, it rubbs off in the etch process.
Use a paint pen like Testors or Dykem or something that is really painted on. Afterward you can scrub it off with steel wool and it works great. And if you get a big one and a little one, you can make donuts by touching the big pen to the hole, and traces by connecting the donuts with the thin pen.
Other methods I've used are photolithographic, by far the best process with transparencies, hand taped which can come out good, hand drawn/painted , and manually drafted paper artwork that was xeroxed onto transparency.
Another note, if you're going to do it by hand, this process helps 1.) cut and adhere a piece of graph paper to the copper side of the board. 2.) layout your parts and plan the holes/spacing 3.) connect your circuit on paper /circuit roadmap 4.) drill 5.) remove the circuit roadmap using acetone (easy if you use 3M spray #77, peels right off) 6.) burnish the board and clean 7.) copy your paper artwork to the board with a paint pen 8.) etch/clean/load and you're done with decent results.
