pfft... why wouldn't you need? run a couple things at once =) Got to love surplus stores. I have one near that sells everything from industrial lasers to pulse capacitors to thousands of feet of heat shrink tubing.
Now that's the attitude i like .
Obviously there's other people than me who drool over surplus stock, whether it's potentially useful but takes up lots of space and will take several lifetimes to use, or whether it's almost completely useless but cool.
What's the most useless thing, or largest quantity of something vaguely useful that you've bought of anything, because it was cheap and 'techie'.
I have a reel with 4km of missile guidance wire on it (so I now know the maximum range of wire-guided missile), bought for the cost of the postage. 4 steel cores, about 20ohm/m, 20N breaking strain, 0.5mm total diameter. I must have used about 50m of the stuff since buying it over 2 decades ago.
1000 white LEDs for 1p each from eBay may sound like a good idea, but I hadn't bothered to figure how long it would take to handle, mount, solder enough to get any useful light from them. So far, 12 have been made into a prototype PIC-flashed Christmas tree decoration.

This is also known as having a 'moregasm' while parts shopping.
Probably a big 'surplus' pull I got would be 6x 1500uF 450V caps (but those are going to be used kinda soon), 4 230V 30A solid state relays, and 4 SCR pucks (which I'll probably not use for a long time since I have to clamp them).
I just got 200 0.01uF 1600V WIMA FKP1 caps recently, and also I have too many parts bins of parts that I have yet to use....
The 1000 white LED's though seems like a good idea if you can get a little help in the assembly.

That would be fun, a surplus exchange, trade for stuff you could use =p I don't by lots of stuff, i get stuff that are too powerful for me to use. Like 4 250A 1200v stud diodes.... If only i could rectify 250A mains *drools*

Yea, btw what are you gonna do with them? It would take a omgton to make anything useful.
Anyway, why can't i get neat stuff like that? Hehe, he says while looking at an 833c.. But i want that place that John got all his variacs from, i have seen some of the stuff and omgiwisb! (omg i want it so bad ;))

I think the radar takes the cake but I'll post anyway. I got 50,000 1n4148 through hole diodes they were free. Useful but with that amount it would take me 14 lifetimes to use them all and they are so dirt cheap they aren't even worth selling. I have an INSANE amount of capacitors. I'm talking over 1000lbs of them total. I'm not going to list them.

Heh, I don't know if dumpster diving finds count, but I allways riffle through every trash container labeled "Electronics"
Probably the weirdest thing I've dug out was a Siemens 157kW motor controller (yes, 157000 Watts). Well, it did have a lot of usefull and/or cool parts, but damn was that thing huge! Damn near busted my back lifting it out of the dumpster and it blocked one of the most important passageways in my room for months.

Lucky you, I've never ever seen any container labeled "Electronics"... Most of my stuff comes from recycling yards or the "dangerous waste" van which comes every half year to our village.
I once got 5 boxes filled with various old electronic parts from dad's friend, most of it was useless, but at first I couldn't believe what I found in one of the boxes - 10 identical flyback secondaries!!! (the HV lead was badly attached to them and I broke it in about half of them... maybe they could be repaired but so far I couldn't have been bothered )
