I'm 17 years old, being into electronics as long as I can remember. Don't remember exactly when I started with HV but when I was about 9 I tried to build a SGTC with a 12v 1.5F capacitor, luckily my dad stopped me..

It's wonderful to see so many young people coming into the hobby, as for a long time I feared that with amateur electronics, home construction had long since given way to ready-made consumer goods, which has taken most of the skill and interest out of amateur radio, for example.
It is nearly half a century since I made my first high voltage apparatus - an ignition coil bought from a scrap yard for a few pennies, with an old Post Office relay as interruptor, and a 100W light bulb as ballast connecting it to the mains. The relay arcs were almost as brilliant as the high voltage discharge whose excitement I shall never forget.

Wow that is how I started to with a relay switch and a spark plug coil.

21 here, mechatronic/ applied physics major at chico state,
I've been taking stuff apart all my life,
just started to get into actually making electronics because I realized my EE classes were teaching me nothing about building circuits... just how to analyze circuits that I can use spice for...
I saw a TC at Coachella a couple years back and decided that I wanted to build one...

There seems to be a preponderance of youngsters here (compared to my 53 summers). Due to hitting the tab key too fast, I did a search for, rather than navigate to, 4hv.org and spent a few moments looking at some of the hits. According to Quantcast ...
This site reaches approximately 8,105 U.S. monthly people. The site appeals to a middle aged, college educated, heavily male group
So there you go, don't use Quantcast's services if the age of your audience is important, or their worldwide distribution for that matter.

I think Tesla Down Under is about the same age as you - which just a bit younger than me!
