I agree those are some nice arcs for only 12V input.
Well for tesla coils its not unusual that something catastrophically fails. What relay needs to be tough is the capacitor, But yeah using a big pile of tiny caps for it generally works fine or some people made caps from glass bottles.

Hehe, once we were on high and made a live proof that there's not much point in making flyback-driven SGTCs. The "live proof" was a small OLSGTC built off a half of my old VTTC secondary which got burned so I cut it in two just for the case I'd need a choke/a test secondary/a small expoxy-cardboard bat one day, with a really junky toroid. The whole construct was fed from an old leak-detector supply (had an inductive choke serving as a sparkgap electrode switching magnet as well and a SINGLE LONE PAPER CAP!). No calculations were made at all, we roughly caught the resonant turn (not much to choose from as it was somewhere between 1 and 2 turns in fact, so had some fun with the junk toroid bending), and fired all that pile of junk off. However with all that mess, including a hilariousely low breakrate (less then 50) the attempt can be called a total success, firing an almost 3cm corona and striking a target like 6cm away! With film caps, an IGBT-based switch and proper calculations this really small and virtually invulnerable concept can easily fit in a cigarette box, becoming a very small OLTC that can outrun many of the flyback-driven coils.

I can see if I can use my friends camera again u should see it at 30v looks like the arc is 3 times longer than that video. The arc is longer than the fly back it self I have to use a chicken stick.I have gone up to 48v and it works for about 5 seconds or one arc and then the fets burn up one at a time so I made it easy to change the mosfets with two three pin PC fan connectors.
