I was your age when I started, but looking back i realized pliers are BAD unless they are properly rated, which is rarely the case unless you have really nice, electrical pliers made for power line workers... mount one terminal to a solid object, that is not capable of providing a conductive path to you. Then run an HV wire (or a regular wire if it stays away from dangerous locations) to the end of a decently long wooden stick 11 and not experienced HV is a little dangerous to use mains voltage... start with the flyback driver, then move to mains.
